OC outfitting question
Will Vyna-bond stick instantly like contact cement or will I be able to move the parts around if I goof up? How long should I let it cure before rolling? I'm re-doing the anchors for the Mohawk thigh retainer. The old ones came out easily with channel-locks & a heat gun.
I hope to get this OC finished this weekend. I made extended decks last night...they sure look goofy Hope they help keep it at least a little dryer...

It's pretty much instant - you don't get a second chance if you are getting a good bond. I remember reading somewhere that you should take a hair dryer to each piece between coats and have always done that. If I have ever had an achor fail, it pulled the vinyl up, too...

Outfitting the Sequel eh?
Use MEK and brush a thin coat on boat and piece to be attached...Let dry completely (5 min). Put another coat on both and and let dry....
Put 1 thin coat of vinabond on each piece and let dry (at least five minutes if thin coat). Put another thin coat of vinabond and let dry at least 10 minutes.
Make sure your glue is dry, the MEK solvent, and the MEK in the vinabond needs to evaporate so you do not delaminate or melt your royalex...Do not stick together wet pieces...
Take the wifes hair dryer and heat both pieces well (alternating boat/piece for about 5 minutes total) to reactivate the glue. It will get tacky.
Line everything up when you stick it....You get one chance, it won't come back up unless you put some more serious heat to it to remove it...
Stick pieces in center of glued area and work out quickly, air bubbles are not good but if you get one use a pin to get patch stuck down....
Can't wait to see it at the falls when done....

Mike,
DO NOT use the vynabond wet. The MEK in the vynabond will melt, damage and/or weaken your royalex hull if you do not let dry and heat to apply the outfitting. You let it dry to evapaorate the MEK solvent in the cement. You use it just like contact cement, but heat the patches before applying.
Another good source/reference is the installation section on the Mike Yee website.
I have seen two boats ruined by using wet vynabond. Seriously softens up the hull and or delaminates the royalex....

I hope the link works.
This is what happens when vynabond is used wet.

Hey English girl....repost your link, It does not work
and I'd like to see MEK carnage.
I fully agfree that it is bad to apply the patch when the glue is still wet. You do have to reheat. Besides, if you think it through, you have nothing to lose by letting it dry. The worst result is a bad bond and that is easy to redo.

Thanks for the info. I'll let 'em dry, heat 'em & VERY carefully place them in the boat.
Once that's all done, how long before I can safely strap in & throw that sucker in a big, nasty hole? I know sdbrassfield wants to see me get munched in the dumpster
Scott, I think they're having music & fireworks at the park at Weldon on Saturday July 1. If you're not going to the 1st weekend of WOR this could be an option. It's an 'advanced planned release' weekend too http://www.dom.com/about/companies/ncpower/advance.jsp

Mike,
You might want to wait till next day to use the boat. I would not worry about the outfitting after that... If you need help let me know. I will be glad to combine outfitting with a round or two against/with the Dumpster.
Hate to miss the falls on the 1st but we are heading to WOR early this year. Will be leaving at 3am next friday so we can beat the crowd and paddle the Nanty on friday morning. Will be there through the weekend and come back on Monday to beat some traffic again.
Plan to run the Chatooga III on Saturday & Nolichucky Gorge on Sunday. Not sure what we will run on Monday but will use the Upper Hooch below the 115 Bridge (Gonzo fun run at 1,500 to 2,500 cfs) or CarteCay as my alternate runs if water levels do not cooperate during the weekend. I can also be talked into other runs, just depends on levels up there. You know we are gauge gurus and go where the water cooperates....
Two of us are thinking of heading to Falls dam tomorrow. I have only been to that play area one time in the past...They have been releasing for the past few days at 2,500+. I know it isn't as fun or worthy as Weldon but may be checking it out since we have not been in so long...
Also we are watching the Haw or upper Tar for tomorrow. The Buffalo creek tributaries (Haw Basin) have a combined 4,000+ cfs as of about 7 tonite. It will take at least 12 -16 hours for that water to get down to the lower section though. Will be a close call for tomorrow morning. It will certainly make a good run if it makes it down to the lower section in time. I am also watching the Upper Tar which is getting up close to minimum, but based on rainfall today it will likely be a stretch if it gets to far above that.
Its great though, at least we will have choices. Busier than a one legged guy in a kickin contest...

Well that was easy enough The hardest part was drawing the doggone outline of the patches on the boat. Everything lined up. No bubbles or wrinkles.
The river was too high for the big hole to form today, so I hopped into a couple of small holes for a few rounds of surfing & rolling So far everything has held.
I also extended the bow deck to 36" with polyethylene. This sheds a lot of water when surfing, but the boat still fills up when you punch holes and/or roll
Thanks for the help. CBoats proves once again to be a great asset.

Mike,
Glad you are enjoying the Sequel. I drove to Richmond Saturday and bought a green Encore in great shape. Stopped at Weldon on my way home and ran the ledge 4 times. Paddled up to the wave but had no flotation in the boat and I didn't think the wave would hold me anyway. Still had a ball. I had forgotten how stable the boat was.
I was going to extend the deck too if I had kept it. I found 4' x 8' abs at a place in Raleigh but decided the boat was too squirrelly for me.
Vic and I are going to Weldon tomorrow if the level is right. Come on out.

I heard you got the Encore. Glad you like it. The Sequel is slow & wet, but it turns great & rolls easily. I just added chevrons to the deck & tied the bow bag up so I can bail. I think I'll like this set-up. I hope to get it on the Ocoee this week.
Weldon is at that goofy in-between level where there's not much surfing to be had. If they don't generate, tomorrow evening or Thursday morning may be good.

The solvents eat the plastic, thats what solvent was made to do, dissolve other organic compounds, yes I was a chemist at one point.
Heres how to line em up, the patches i mean, just put like 4 or 5 tick marks across the patch and onto the hull. This way you can realign the patches the exact way you had them when taped on the hull. Also, label your patches, I use ST-S for example, Starboard Stern. Use your own codes of course. The tick martks help tremendously.
Use the same solvent that is in your glue. I believe Toluene is in Vinyabond. So prep the surface with toluene. Not too much is needed. The solvent actually softens the area to be glued. Always lightly sand the area too. Then prep. Let the glue tack up, like the other posters suggested.
BTW I prefer Sta-Bond, prepped with MEK. It is a 2 part epoxy, very strong. HF
