Kelly-Rand's Storm Chaser

Just a couple of pics from last Sunday on the Winnipesauki in Franklin NH. It's a good looking boat.

Re: Canoe instruction... why do so few of us pay for it?

Tommy McGnarlz, I don't think I could offend you no matter how hard I tried. :D Shep Shep you'd have to work pretty hard to offend me. 20 years back when I started canoeing I was fortunate in that the Boston AMC had a good OC program with lot's of decent paddlers contributing as well a...

Re: Canoe instruction... why do so few of us pay for it?

WRT to all of the others, I think, in canoeing we miss the critical difference between classes and coaching. The ski industry has gotten this right, I think. Rank beginners need classes in order to see what the basic skills are and how they are applied. This would be equivalent to the first ~2 days...

Re: Probe 12i/13 vs Outrage x

Either would be a good first solo whitewater canoe.
Given the choice I'd go with the Outrage because it's equally maneuverable and quicker.

Re: Outrage vs OutrageX?

IMO 250 lbs is to big for a 12' Outrage. I go 200 and feel a little big for mine.
IMO the 13' X feels just like my 12' Outrage but carries my weight better.
IMO the Rampage is a refrigerator box. The Outrage X is a longer Outrage.
YMMV

Re: Pumps

i think your all electrically challenged. :( Yep, that's me. Tommy the electrically challenged Electrician. Installing and maintaining a pump in my boat is too much like work. Nope don't want to. Besides the guy's I learned from always taught me to look for the dry line. It's elusive, that dry line...

Re: Retirement Boat. Suggestions?

I pole a Milbrook Souhegan. When I say I pole I mean that I scrape it over more rocks than there ought to be in a river. Except for the time I pinned it, (poor judgement and faulty flotation!) it has held up fine. The pin resulted in a few small tears which I patched with some 4 oz S glass. The patc...

Re: kneeling thwarts

I got pinned in my river tripping boat, a Swift Osprey. That had a bench seat, 9" off the bottom and thigh straps. The hull was pinned on its side, bow upstream. It did not deform or press on my legs. The current on my chest forced me to lean back so that I could not extract my calves from under the...

Re: dagger ovation

Of the hulls you listed, the Ovation is most like an Outrage. 1' shorter, a little bit slower. Similar handling. If you pack like a backpacker you might be able to camp out of it.

Lower Back Pain and Cross Forward Strokes?

"What a drag it is growing old." It's been two weeks since I'v paddled. Grumble. We did two runs on the Natchaug at Diana's Pool. The first I felt fine. But I guess I must have done something throwing the boats in Craigs van to head back up. Half way down the second run my lower back was sore. Cross...

Looks to me like a nice Prospectorish tandem. It certainly has higher shearline in the bow.

Wood is; warmer, flexes nicely, can be repaired and is nice looking. Just don't use it for poling:) I've had mine for 12 yrs and had the edging done over twice. Next time it is in for service I'll probably have the blade covered with carbon, cause I'm doing more creaking now. I pole with my Mitchell...
