Re: Ambitious tandem for a light team

My spousal-unit Kim and I are a long-time caption team. Also pretty light combined. Overall we like the caption fine, but wanted something with a bit more carve. So a few years back I set up a viper 12' as a tandem. (it's the boat that Einar talks about in the first thread that you linked to) The pl...

Idaho

first skookumchuk creek, now idaho.

sounds like it's time to get over to the mainland this summer for a long-overdue paddling safari.

tougher question : where to paddle

Assuming you can find a couple of oc-1s to rent, your next question is finding something to paddle on Vancouver Island in August. Things get pretty dry here by late summer. Gold River may have water in it, but maybe not (as of today, not) Campbell River is hardly worth the effort of renting the boat...

Redline

Dagger Redline comes close to the shape of an RPM, but has a flatter hull and harder chine. Works fine as a C-1.

Not sure why, but the chronic / vibe / orbit fish cockpit seems a bit wider up front than the older boats switch / jive etc.

Yup. I've been paddling a chronic C1 lately

I don't have a ton of experience with that generation of playboats, so I can't offer you fine-tuned comparisons. That said, the chronic is slow and has soft chines, so not much carve. But it loves bouncing around on the foam-pile.

solo vs. tandem

I did a mohawk viper 12' as a tandem a few years ago. Interesting project, but ultimately not a keeper. Combined weight of the team wa s ~ 260lbs. and we found the boat a bit too wet. Though it was a bit more sporty than our caption.

I used a viper 12' for a couple of years as a tandem. I'm ~140 lbs and my partner is ~110. Our main boat is a caption and we were looking for something shorter with a harder chine. The viper fit that bill ok -- a lot more edge, and a nice light boat. The down side was that the viper was a bit wet, a...

Some folks out here tried the cheaper galasport paddles a couple of years ago and had consistently bad experiences. But I don't know if these are the same paddles. (the same folks all seem to like their aqua-bound paddles now) On the other hand, I've been using a higher-end galasport paddle (the car...
