Re: Repair Questions- for cracks in hull

I would strongly recommend G Flex over conventional epoxy even though it is more expensive as it will give you a better bond to ABS. You can use it to wet out and bond any type of cloth you like, aramid, fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc but G Flex is more viscous than conventional epoxy. I would only w...

Re: smallest solo whitewater canoes with a seat option

You could order a 12' 8" Dagger Impulse with a kneeling thwart. Either a kneeling thwart and two thwarts or three thwarts. I don't believe a "seat" was an option but I could be wrong.

Re: smallest solo whitewater canoes with a seat option

What do you mean by a "seat option"? Are you talking about the ability to install a traditional wood-framed seat or kneeling thwart as opposed to a foam pedestal? If so, virtually any ABS canoe that had regular wood or synthetic gunwales would work. I'm not sure what the smallest one was but the Dag...

Re: Esquif

Are they not still molding L'Edges? Are they still making Twintex canoes?

Actually, I was unsuccessful in contacting Esquif even back in the days when there was Royalex.

Re: Does anybody know how to decipher mad river serial numbe

It is a very high quality boat, built back in the day when Mad River Canoe was one of the premier composite canoe builders, if not the premier maker. The Explorer and the Malecite were their most popular and versatile tandem models. I still don't know what to make of the camo pattern inside and out....

Re: Does anybody know how to decipher mad river serial numbe

Yes it is an Explorer. I am curious about the "A" appended to the end of the HIN. I suspect the "KA" denotes a Kevlar/Airex Explorer model which MRC produced 1983-1995. You should be able to tell if this is the case as there will be a visible roughly football-shaped raised area on the hull bottom wh...

Re: Does anybody know how to decipher mad river serial numbe

Are you sure you are not missing a character in that HIN (hull identification number). Most all HINs of that vintage, and all of those used by MRC to my knowledge, used a 12 character HIN. The KA at the end does not count. That is an appendage. Mad River typically appended a "K" to the end of the HI...

Re: Nova Craft Ocoee Opinions

When it comes to canoes, Royalite usually refers to R84 which is a thermoplastic of different composition than Royalex. I don't believe that NC made Ocoees out of R84. I think they specified two different gauges of Royalex. They called one standard and the other heavy, but judging from the finished ...

Re: Nova Craft Ocoee Opinions

Nova Craft version is significantly narrower, less stable, and somewhat faster than the Dagger and Bell versions is what I have heard from multiple owners.

Re: Has anyone built a removable electric pump setup?

I have generally mounted a Tsunami 1200 pump at the rear of my pedestal/saddle and attached a battery box containing a 3.3 aHr SLA battery to the front of the pedestal/saddle. The battery box contains an on/off switch which comes out a hole at the top of the plastic box (an inexpensive Walmart Outdo...

Re: Acquired a Whitesell Descender looking for repair advice

Thanks milkman and gnsmith116. No the solid layers of ABS in the Royalex are one uniform layer. I have not seen just a portion of the solid layer of ABS peel away leaving the rest covering the foam core, but I suppose it could. If that is what happened, I don't think I would try bonding it back down...

Re: Acquired a Whitesell Descender looking for repair advice

First there is no PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in Royalex. Royalex is a 5 layer sandwich composite thermoplastic material with an outer layer of colored vinyl on the inside and outside. The structural part of the Royalex consists of three layers of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene), with solid layers on bot...

Re: Open boat for a bigger paddler

Bell Prodigy X, Esquif Vertige X, Mad River Outrage X, Dagger Caper, Dagger/Mad River Caption, Dagger Genesis, Mad River ME, Mohawk XL 13, Mohawk XL 14 are all traditional appearing canoes that have been considered good for a larger paddler. The Dagger Rival I would say is not. Small to medium size ...

Re: Shoulder injury question.

I have developed shoulder issues as well. I do not have a history of a documented injury to my left shoulder, but I did "tweak" it pretty badly hands rolling a kayak many years ago. I suspect I subluxed the joint, which is sort of like a partial, temporary dislocation. I have always paddled C1 and O...

Re: zephyr shedding

I could be wrong but I don't think it is fiberglass fibers that shed from Twintex but little shards of polypropylene. I suspect this only happens after the hull ages some, but it can be really obnoxious, much worse IMO that the typical "itch" one gets from sanding fiberglass. These tiny shards are l...
