Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon

The boat at Moenkopi is as far as I know a not the same boat that Jim Michaud has or had stored in Flagstaff.

Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon

When I was in the Moenkopi warehouse before our last trip in November, they had a Whitesell available for rent.

Re: Mamba 8.5 as C1

I have paddled the Mamba 8.5 a bit, never as C1 however, only as a yak. Was not really impressed, I thought that the volume distribution was off, the stern had too little volume, it seemed to want to stern ender everywhere. The 2nd gen Mamba looks better from that perspective. Personally, I would go...

Re: Anyone heard of these Drysuits?

One thing I do not like about those suits arethe exposed gaskets. Gaskets rip fairly easily when poked by anything. The latex is also very sensitive to UV light and brittles and dries out very quickly when exposed to it. Something to think about.

Re: Weight Range For Blackfly

The Big Dog Force OC1 is a creeker/ riverrunner and not a park and play boat. The Big Dog Chaos OC 1 is their playboat. As far as the Blackfly Blackfly is concerned I found that, based on my limited seat time in it, that at my weight of ~190 lbs, it is great in smaller play features but it floats a ...

Re: C1 for those who need a tall saddle?

Coz it was great paddling with you in Costa Rica! All good suggestions in this thread. As far as what boat to focus on is concerned, what kind of paddling do you want to do? That is a huge factor in determining which boat you should look at, i.e. there is no point in looking at something like a Casc...

Re: Lap belt vs thigh straps

I do personally prefer thigh straps over la lap belt. A set of high mounted thigh straps, with the side hull anchor behind and below the hip bone and the crotch anchor as high as possible positively focks my legs into position and there is virtually no way for my bum to slide around sideways on the ...

Re: C1 knee strap placement

I beg to differ on the snowboard straps. Unless you use a separate quick release set-up, they are pretty sketchy IMHO, that's at least what I thought of them in the boats I paddled that had them in. The ratchets are NOT a reliable quick release IMHO in a pin situation. I simply use 2" flat webbing a...

Re: Bulkhead + thigh straps

Jan, it's on the list of things to do. I will replace the plastic tank with foam and replace the factory thwarts with hockey sticks. Maybe I'll cut out the deck area and replace the plastic with traditional lacing That should shave off some weight. But I'll keep the factory plastic seat, as it allow...

Re: L'edge Lite - “Guillaume-fitting”

Good points there. I have not seen many adjustable bulkhead systems, but none of them had any advantage over a strap system. Most of them had either, after a quick exit, many bits and pieces floating next to the boat or then one lost the ability to enter or exit quickly or they were so loose and fle...

Re: Bulkhead + thigh straps

Here are some pics showing the thigh strap set-up in my Big Dog Force. The upper strap anchors are attached to the bolts that hold the side floatation tanks in the boat. In a L'edge You will have to drill a hole through the hull on each side. The important part is to make sure that the anchor point ...

Re: L'edge Lite - “Guillaume-fitting”

Why would you even want to? But then, it can't be harder than with every other PE Canoe: - drill holes in the sides for side anchoring of straps - use saddle w/ out bulkhead "wings" that extends forward enough to be held by thwart - put something under/in saddle to anchor bottom side of straps (she...

Re: L'edge L'offside recovery

My go-to recovery technique against off-side flips is the righting pry. Don't remember If I ever had to use it in a L'Edge, but it saved my lower back side a few times in just about any OC1 I ever paddled.
