Animal Stories
Well, winter has finally come to the north country. While it hovers below zero and you contemplate throwing a few more logs on the fire, I thought it might be a good time to share a few stories of animals encountered in either your paddling voyages or perhaps as a surprise in your canoe. I'll start ...

Jim et al, Great comments on gunnel preservation. Jim's comments on the need for careful oiling and preservation of the most important item to allow him his boating is great advice. In the past, I have removed the gunnels for a tuning and then reattached them with new stainless screws. Greyed and mo...

Time to give Thanks
To all who have been blessed with the enjoyment of paddling. Yeah, even those with two blades per stick. Tomorrow, we sit with our families and give thanks to many things. I would like to give thanks to my many paddling friends who always call when "its" up, loan me equipment when I can't find mine,...

Jon, I keep my forward/backward orientation pretty much the same as I do for an onside forward stroke. Due to the awkward positioning that I experience, I choke up my grip on the shaft a bit (6-8") so I can more easily get the paddle to as verticle as possible on the catch. Both arms are held straig...

Scott, Corrections to be made. The Cyclone was the longer version of the Twister, designed by Dave Paton and Mark Clark. They ruled the OC2 Mens Racing Class for many years and we hope to see them paddle again in the future. Glenn Pratt had one at NOC and paddled it in the medium classes as a solo b...

Scott, The Hurricane was a short downriver doubles boat. It was a bit wider than the Cyclone and didn't have the tumblehome. The Tempest was a solo marathon boat. It had a fairly high slightly flared bow and could handle rough water well. MR made both in great kevlar and foam core race layups. I've ...

In search of the Bird Report on C-1 Nationals
I'm in hopes that AB will see this thread and reply. Another recent thread had an S. Broam link to pictures of the races at Charlotte. http://subido.info/index_files/page0010.htm I saw some great shots of Alden and Joel among others in C-1. Thanks Scott! The water looks big and pushy. How about a re...

Why do I race
Excellent question to start a thread on Chris. I'm glad I got the opportunity to meet you at the NOC Nats. I race primarily for the pleasure of having a friend have to relinquish a warm PBR for me to enjoy on the occasions when something occurs to let me down the course faster than he. We obviously ...

Thank You Connie and Sam
I would like to take the time to thank Connie Minor and Sam Montague for the great job they did in the preparation of two Nationals and the hosting of one over a short time span. We went through the bid process last fall and awarded the race to a site where construction was just beginning. Connie st...

Great News from the Middleland
The best to your family, Craig. We all missed you at Nationals, but you were gone for all the right reasons. Psycho and MJ proudly brought their new boy, Noah to his first race at the tender age of three weeks and Andy and Vanessa had their newborn girl, Aspen there as well. Its great to see the nex...

The X class was originally inserted to allow for innovation outside of the defined rules. The Open Canoe Slalom Committee and the racers later had a great debate and voted on limitations to that innovation. Examples of allowed innovation are differences in allowed tumblehome and end height. When the...

There's supposed to be primitive camping on an Island in the nearby Catawba. I expect that will be where most of us penny pinchin boaters will stay and the late night music and hooch (shhh! Don't tell anyone!) should make it memorable like all encampments near Nationals have always been. Not sure on...

Alden, For starters try Jacques or Guilleume Chasse at Esquif. I'm sure they can put you in touch with an anglophone who can clue you in. I know a few of the Open Canoe slalom boaters stayed after Nationals last summer in Jonquiere and ran the Shipshaw river on the north side of the Saguanay but a b...

I agree with Jim. Racing is no excuse. Perhaps a picture of you working on a lap top during a run added to your website will convince us of your dedication and discipline to finalizing your labor of love. Any chance of allowing me 10 minutes on Photoshop with Craig's picture before you commit it to ...
