Re: Other wood species for gunwales
I used sassafras. It smells like root beer when you router the edges. It's very pretty when teak oiled. It's also pretty rot resistant. We found it at the Zenith Sawmill near the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River.

Re: Wanted: A few ruptured open boats
I've been wanting to cut down an Ocoee to see if it would make a good kids boat. Keep seeing a lot of interest in boats for smaller kids and tired of seeing only Jackson making a boat for the wee ones.
Would love to see some smaller scale, affordable, open canoes hit the market.

Re: Outrage vs OutrageX?
I have an Outrage X in my boat pile. Never paddle it... Thinking about getting rid of some unused boats to add an Option to my stable.

This is a good subject. TSRA's board has been wanting a way to link calendars for major events without someone having to fill out our form to add an event on our site calendar. I like this discussion.

Here's the link to the kit from jackson kayaks.

I haven't paddled any of their boats as a C boat yet, but hope to soon.

If you are wanting good floatation, check out this one from MTI Adventurewear. http://www.mtiadventurewear.com/products.php?id=4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It offers good floatation along with some other cool features like pockets. I fully agree, when using a swiftwater vest, get...

Re: Those who put feet under the pegs, how do you stay in?
I agree with Shep! Slide them babies up and put the balls of your feet against the foot pegs. You should be able to hang upside down with the boat tied on a set of racks. (not recommended, if anyone saw me doing that I am denying every word) Also, in an open boat you have the advantage of having som...

Re: Those who put feet under the pegs, how do you stay in?
Personally, I press the bottom of my feet against the foot braces to hold myself in the boat. In my C-1 there are no foot braces but foam blocks to press my toes against. You can cut some short lengths of swimming noodles to put under your ankles, this will hold you against the foot braces better if...

Re: Dagger Impulse Airbags
Welcome to the Open Boat world. Air bag sizes differ with the paddler. I like big one's for more displacement. 54" bags will work fine unless you don't like all the Open in the boat, then I'd suggest putting one about 72" in the front and let it lay on your knees. Check http://www.mohawkcanoes.com/a...

Re: Replacing vinyl gunwales
I have replaced both vinyl and wood gunnels. The easiest way to get the rivets out is use a hand grinder and grind the top of the rivet off the gunnels you are going to toss out. Or drill, poke and continue 100 times. I had to put vinyl gunnels on my original Blue Hole OCA because the original one's...

Re: Saddle Partially Unglued
I use a plastics putty knife and still be very careful with the corners of the putty knife that it doesn't gouge the royalex. After sanding and prep with acetone, apply weldwood cement, from your local hardware store, to both surfaces. Allow to get tacky, then stick them together and weight them to ...

That was too cool! What a beautifully crafted boat, notice the expert J stroke the boat builder has. I am impressed.

Re: Singing the paddling blues
That aint' nothing. You should have seen my Blue Hole before I straightened it out. Had to cut the Gunnels off. Then let is sit in the yard full of water for a few weeks, put new Gunnels on it, still a river runner. Not bad for a first generation OCA either! Straighten the Gunnels and put it back on...

Warm water. Set it in the Sun with water in it. Of course this will take some time for nature to take it's course.
Look at me talking. 7 months out of a total hip replacement myself and just up to Class II in the Open Boat.
