Re: Can anyone ID this slalom C1?

I had forgotten about the Extrabat. I think that's the next generation after the Super. I have a mold for the Super that I would love to sell but I never molded the Extra. Davey would obviously be a better authority than I am for these designs. Best of luck. JRS

Re: Can anyone ID this slalom C1?

It is a Batmax of some sort. There were several versions. The original came out in 1982 and the Super Batmax in 1986. At least one more version since then, maybe two. This looks like a Super but it could be a later version; I have no way of telling. I've been pretty much out of contact with boating ...

Re: FS: Slalom C2 old school new ready for outfitting $200

I built it in January 1987, third boat out of the mold after it was modified for the new ICF blunt-end specs. I will respect the privacy of the buyer and not say who it was. I'm amazed that this boat has sat around for 30 years without being outfitted or paddled.

Wow! Hey Jennifer, where did that come from? Could you post the serial number or e-mail it directly to me? I would like to check my files on this boat. Thanks.

Re: Upper Yough- 1970

Roy, Don & Deb sounds like Don & Deb Pepper, who lived on the right bank of the river in Friendsville. Their deck made an easy take out. They should know about the river gage. I asked Jim Snyder and Charlie Walbridge about this; both live nearby. Jim wrote, "I'm under the impression a change happene...

Re: Upper Yough- 1970

There was no change in the gage between 1970 and my last trip on the UY in 1987. I have no idea if there have been changes since then. I will try to find out.

Re: Decked C2 Modification Question

I guess I'm a little late with this suggestion but I would avoid the use of any Kevlar in the deck of a boat right around the cockpits. If you should be so unlucky as to pin the boat and wrap it around a rock, you really, really want it to break and not trap you inside. I have built a lot of boats a...

Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon

Man, I would not want to run the Grand in an open canoe, even with lots of air bags, and fully loaded to boot. I ran it in a C-1 (almost 50 years ago) with raft support so it was an unloaded boat. Lots of fun that way.

This is a still from the movie. For a water-level comparison, look at the rock next to Bill's left shoulder in the 1959 photo. This has become a washover pillow in the 1970 photo. Also look at the large rock to the right; the left side of it is un...

Bill Bickham with his boat lodged on a tree, 31 May 1959. This is the spot where the 1970 film begins. The upward-pointing limb was gone by then but you could still see the tree trunk under the water when starting down the rapid. Ph...

Re: Upper Yough- 1970

7 August 1970, 2.1 ft on the Sang Run gage. The kayak is Jim Stuart, the rightie C-1 is John Yearick, the leftie with red spare paddle on the deck is me and the other leftie is Tom Irwin. The boats were designed by Pavel Bone for 1970, the last year for 80cm boats. I had one for racing but was using...

Rattler

I also had a Rattler in 1984, which I tried to use at the NOC Nationals. It was too easy to spin to suit me. There was a downstream gate in a right eddy below the falls and I simply could not drive the boat across the eddy line without spinning out. I went back to my Zoomer for the race and placed 4...

A real World changer

Most of the boats that have been discussed in this thread have had a significant impact on whitewater canoeing in the USA but had little impact on the world. For true international impact let's look at the Gemini C-2 designed by Steve Chamberlin. With a couple of exceptions, all slalom C-2s up throu...

Clearing up a couple of things

I have read through the entire thread on boats that changed the world. I will nominate another one and, hopefully, have the final word on a couple of things. 1. The original 73 cm wide, 4 m long Hahn slalom C-1 was NOT pirated. I built the first mold with specific permission of Paul Hahn, designer. ...
