How would 'most canoers' not at least have a decent forward stroke. I dont get it. Probably because they spend too much time messing about with other strokes that are less important. A decent forward stroke takes a long time to master, and needs constant work. Most probably don't realise how defici...

Simple
Onside forward stroke is by far the most important stroke, and deserves a lot more attention than most people give it. Next most important to me would be an onside bow draw/cut. With just these two strokes you can do most things in a positive way. Don't need a roll at all if you're nailing the lines...

Why Paddle
This is without doubt a ridiculous Poll though it still makes interesting reading. I've put 1 down as it's the closest to what I've always felt about boating. I'm 41 and paddle Grades 1-5 depending on what my mates are doing and what I feel like. It get's me to the sort of places I like to be. When ...

Coruh
Hi Marc, Dave Manby is the man as Bob says. There is a guy called Birol who runs a campsite on the Coruh and can organise transport when you're there. I left my slightly cracked Prelude out there with him in 2007 http://www.songofthepaddle.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?5479-Turkey-trip&highlight=turkey...

Boat in Ardeche
My old Superfly is down there, but unfortunately I won't be there until September so you won't be able to get to it. I would recommend you try posting something on http://www.eauxvives.org/ there are plenty of paddlers from that area and some might be able to sort you out. I've spent a lo...

Afganistan etc
Have you or anyone you know of ever paddled in Afghanistan or Pakistan? I don't know anyone who has paddled in Afganistan, though I've thought about it as we have a collaborator working out their studying epidemiology and it looks like he has a sweet river running right past his house. If your inte...

Kayaks/Canoes in UK
In the UK, the general public and press tend to use the term "canoe" for all types of kayak, sea kayak open canoes etc, they also tend to refer to oars rather than paddles. This seems to wind up quite a lot of the paddling community over here. Within the paddling community the terms used will be ver...

No Keels
I'm afraid this is a no brainer for me, keels completely destro the handling of a whitewater boat. The first canoe I built was from a design with a keel. Although I really liked the design otherwise, the keel made handling very difficult, it also made me feel I had no control over the way the boat t...

Splits
Hi James, I've made two splits, each time with a composite inner and a push button system. Both time I have made the split above the bottom hand, as I suspect this takes less stress than at the throat. The first time was very succesful and I used the paddle quite a bit until I lost it in the back of...

Great video, I'd love to see more video and photo's of open boats proving how fun they can be. I am wondering how Bathtuboy is going to raise the bar.... I'm certainly not going to compete with this as Dooley seems to be doing a lot more paddling than me by the looks of this. There is a little video...

Turkey video
Here is a video of our trip to Turkey this summer to paddle the Coruh river. Appologies for the small amount of cboating though. There is some nice footage at the end of kayaker Ralph failing to cope with the straps in my prelude.

Late start
38. Paddled a little bit of kayak and open canoe flat water only when I was younger. Decided to take it up again in my thirties as my legs were getting a little slow for rugby. Joined the university club were I worked and turned up with a home made wooden boat for the first trip to find they pretty ...
