Re: Mad River Howler for big water (Grand Canyon)?

Paddled a ME down GC 1988, pulled gunnells in to 25 inches for racing, had a great time . but I think with a good roll and pump the Caption woild be a more stable(but not as fun}boat on the GC.(Disclaimer: I have never paddled a Howler except in a slolam race}

Death

I have been involved in 5 different drownings on the river, some with people I was paddling with, some I was involved with after the fact, but it has made me more aware of what was going on around or behind me. It seems that this has made me more likely to look for possible problems, and may have le...

Paraplegic

Know a guy who is paraplegic, paddles hard stuff, but have seen him being helped around hard 4, by his friends by wheelbaring around a rapid.(he got out of boat and flipped over on his hands, while buddy held his legs and they handwalked around a hard portage). Pretty impressive. Dale

Have run Stateline Falls on Watuaga, Big Sandy Falls, Big Splat, Potters Falls, Baby, and Falling Water Falls, in OCA, some with thigh straps, some with just a big styrofoam block, and have been upright at the bottom of all(luck), but was always in center of the boat. There is an old saying that lon...

Broke Taureau

Taureau has split along left seam from cockpit to stern, almost exactly like older glass boats would seperate topdeck from hull if there was seam failure. Any suggestions on a fix? Dale

Paddling alone

Have done that on local creeks, but not my favorite. 1st time down Gaulley at full release, was paddling with a bunch of guys(k1) that I didn't know. We got to Panther Creek, I start to get out, when one of the K1 guys say we are going to Swiss. I ddin't see any of them after that, so ran the middle...

O my God, can't believe you used the words "bridge that hole". Way back in 1979 or there abouts, we had a big bunch of folks from Arkansas go east every spring,. Mixture of K1s and OC1(back then it was primarily Blue Hole OCAs) We did a week where we did Daddys Cr., Big South Fork at about 4grand, W...
