Re: Whithewater tripping solo canoe
I know this was originally a question about boats, but it occurs to me that the limiting factors here are more the size and the weight of load.. Of course, many people do canoe trips because they like the added transport capability of a canoe vs. for example, walking. But if you reconsider your prio...

Re: Quick question on hanging storage for composite boat
I did this with sticks I cut from hazelnut and some rope... hanging my spark upside down. Just a tiny bit wider than the boat, low and far apart enough so I could just slip the bow into the front stick and pull the stern stick over the stern alone. Simple!

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle
I just made a grip using a small piece of paddle shaft (cutoff from another paddle's lenght adjustment) and a piece of another paddle shaft that tapers towards the end, and actually has a slightly smaller diameter than the other shaft. Routered a hole in the handle, rounded the shaft piece to fit sm...

Re: Bulkhead + thigh straps
TGG, if you ever want to get the weight of your force down to 20kg total, I have some suggestions for that.. you still carry the mayhem outfitting around.. those kg's really make a difference, my score so far in converting others is two ppl. The only two who own a force that ever tried mine, to be p...

Also, add some floatation and as much foam as is safely possible.. greatly reduces the risk of a bad outcome, especially when the bags make a turned over boat float so high you can look across under it's gunwales ;D

Re: L'edge Lite - “Guillaume-fitting”
OK, that's some info right there. Now these arguments are unweighted, and everybody's personal preference may differ, so I won't judge any of the points you made, although I find them all valuable for the discussion. Just one thing: Bulkheads can be made quick-release too, just adding a strap simila...

Re: resin for paddle tip
Titanium would be a fancy, but well-working alternative, too. I've seen some Carbon paddles reinforced with it. Lightweight as Aluminum, but resistant as steel and its resilience actually dampens shock better than aluminum which in some cases can lead to the alum tips loosening quickly after multipl...

Re: Broken paddle blade
^^what Kaz said. I had a partially broken Mitchell Carbon blade w/wood core and did just that, using one layer of 6 oz. Carbon. I also repaired another, Kober paddle that was Carbon only using the same technique. Here's the Kober (not much effort went into final sanding, I could have taken more care...

Re: Varnish/sealant for wooden t-grip?
Another advantage of oil vs. varnish or polyurethane I'd like to mention is that if the surface is closed off completely with a sealant, water can get through small cracks or spots that chip off eventually (probably after the first paddle outing..) and not escape, rotting underneath the varnish. Oil...

Re: Dream Trip
Since you're talking "expedition" I'd say it has to be either a first, or first open boat descent, or something scientific involved. Since science is probably not of too much interest, I'd say why not open up something for open boating that may be appealing for a larger group nowadays but has not, o...

Re: L'edge Lite - “Guillaume-fitting”
Why would you even want to? But then, it can't be harder than with every other PE Canoe: - drill holes in the sides for side anchoring of straps - use saddle w/ out bulkhead "wings" that extends forward enough to be held by thwart - put something under/in saddle to anchor bottom side of straps (shee...

Re: Big Dog OC1 Force
I used standard contact adhesive to glue all the minicell together and the saddle down on the floor, pressed it all down with the thwarts, that have center dowels to prevent side slipping. Actually, that wouldn't happen up front due to the Bulkhead, but whatever. I'll just carry that weight ;D The Y...

Re: Saltwood Paddles Vitamin C?
The materials design and build quality looks intriguing, especially the hollow shaft.. but as with many paddles I don't like (and get the intention behind) the neck and blade design, which essentially introduces unnecessary water turbulence when slicing, making for a worse catch of the blade in anyt...
