Clean is better.. I wonder if sand & flame-treat as posted involved prior cleaning too, as I found that alcohol wipe, sand, flame treat holds best with my tests (new ABS to new ABS using GF)

? anybody up for asking West System about that?

Wow, seeing you replaced all those layers with solid ABS (you can get fairly thick 5mm sheets if you want to..) I wonder how much weight that gained? Just thinking here.. if we could use that boiling effect when heat-gunning ABS slurry to (layer) create a solid foam, that would make a great center l...

Canoeing - what was that again?

As pointed out by nfried on paddlenet, you might want to make sure the context is straight when talking about "canoeing" next - check out what the urban dictionary has to say about that:

:o

"I believe I'll go canoeing" - uh-oh!

Wow, that souonds like some good job. So far, I always applied ABS goo in very thin layers that harden in a day or so, but it still takes long. Some small repairs had been hard enough to fend off rocks that scratched the surrouding R84 surface after a day.. which I thought to be sufficient although ...

Sounds great. Yes, indeed, several producers state that Royalex has an ABS core although I can not find any reliable source (for example the manufacurer.. ). Does anyone know such a source? So did you do those repairs directly on the ABS foam or on the (albeit broken) ABS surface? Its hopefully not ...

I also have a positive experience with regular hot glue in this regard.. a T-Grip I just wanted to leave in for a length test stays in there.. and as long as it doesnt release by itself I wont try to reglue. So might be worth a try (and is redoable with just a lighter on trips if it DOES come loose ...

Yeah, chemical solvent welding works, for real. The only problem is - I have a sheet of 30x20 oval area. I can not imagine for the life of me how the solvent will ever get (evaporate) out there! Thats why I would like to rely on the epoxy in this repair. Otherwise I would just smear it all with ABS ...

Hmm, sounds great with all your successfull repairs and patches. I just destroyed three test pieces I made - interesting to see, Gflex does glue to ABS very good for pulling strength, obviously (as mentioned before) it can be sheared off quite easily, so I decided to try a "mechanical" linkage for t...

Hi Guys, thanks for all your input - I guess covering it with cloth is not an option, although I have a polyester fleece that has interesting properties. The darn thing with the bottom flats is probably that it gets compressed OR pulled at depending on where you hit a (rock). I guess what you really...

New RX repair project - a 16 year old Viper 11 bottom..

Check it out here: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/mahyongg/8323188?from=8323191&at=1276767686 I would like to hear your thoughts. Idea so far: dry out the water soaked in, cut to shape some ABS sheet as thick as the original green stuff, lay it in the holes cut before with g-flex underneath and flush o...

Try heating the shaft up with a hot air gun and twist, wiggle and pull.. slowly. Don't overheat.. go easy! Hot to the touch is enough, stop at the slightest signs of burn marks or if the ABS handle softens (Surface, fingernails.. you get the point you dont want to pull the handle off like hot sugar....

You're right - that example with the scraper illustrates how you have to design the anchors according to what forces the glue can take and which not. Its the best example for a peeling force - once you get the blade under the epoxy, it will lift the sticking part without much effort on your side due...

May I add, ABS is not the toughest of materials.. making one from Nylon reinforced with Carbon Fibres or so (every plastic car parts manufacturer can do that.. some paddle companies buy their parts there too: http://www.mergner-paddel.de/canadier_intro.htm ) would probably get over the problem altog...
