Hey Pat, The Otter should be fine for you weight-wise and you are welcome to try mine. I'm hoping to make it to rivers week next year. I'm about 195lb and am nowhere near it's limit. That being said, I think you should get the L'Edge so I can demo it :D I would like to replace the Outrage though. Vi...

I have both the otter and slocan in duralite. Our local rivers are small volume and rocky and the otter seems to be holding up no problem. Both boats are quite flexible. I think this has more to do with the resin then the cloth Hellman uses. I just got back from a fly-in trip with the slocan. Our pi...

Has anyone tried PermaPoxy plastic weld? Seems relatively inexpensive.

Wow! I really don't know much about whitewater canoe design, but when I was looking to buy my first boat several months ago, this is exactly what I was looking for but couldn't find it. Short, conventional shape, partially decked, plastic with a full sized saddle, and loads of fun. Any idea what the...

NiMH are a nice compromise between the weight of SLA and expense of Li. I had a local battery store make one up for me that fits into a 1010 pelican case. The loops on the case make it easy to strap it into the boat. Takes about 30 sec to remove or install.

electric

I'm new to open boating, but it didn't take me long to install an electric pump. Just about any of those electric bilge pumps in the 800-1000gph range should work fine, battery, wire, switch and case. Simple. Now when I fill up the boat surfing that wave or hole, I don't have to go find that "good" ...

There is a guy in Prince George who teaches OC1 playboating, by the name of Lyle Dickieson. Don't know him personally but heard he is excellent. I'm thinking of taking one of his courses in June/July. I got one of Hellman's Otters about 2 months ago and have been having lots of fun with it but could...

Craig & sbroam, Really good comments and suggestions on the practical aspects of rolling on the river. Got to say that practicing in the pool I kept thinking how exposed I felt and wondered how well this would work in a real flip situation. I am going to kept all this in mind for my next pool sessio...

First of all the videographer and commentator was my lovely and always supportive wife. Thanks. Lots of good comments to work on. I thought I was rotating my shoulders square and arching up enough, but obviously not. It seems logical that doing so would give more momentum with the hip/knee snap whic...

rolling critic

I am going to take up the offer of a video critic on my roll. This is my third pool session. The first was a complete disaster. The second was better, but I still couldn't roll. One thing I noticed after the second session was that I was experiencing water damming. The boat has a front bulkhead, and...

Marclamenace, Thanks for the input, there does seem to be a lot of similarity between the otter and solito, fro photographs at least. I have also managed to talk with two people that either own or have paddled an otter. At the risk of incorrectly paraphasing their comments, I will try to pass on som...

Bump

It has been some time since this subject was posted. Anyone paddled a Hellman Otter and can give some feedback on it? I am considering one for my first OC1. Former kayaker, rafter, starting canoeist. Lower back injuries prevents me from sitting in a kayak for any length of time. Tandem canoeing seem...
