I live about 4hrs drive north of Soo Mich. in northern Ontario. There is some amazing boating up here. The Canadian side of Superior has some amazing spring runs such as the Dog, Pukaskwa, Jackpine, Cypress, Mackenzie, Postigami, Current. In summer I most often boat near Hearst, On. where we have se...

Check out Bob Foote's rolling video
Clarion
Check out Bob Foote's roll video. It has a great teaching progression, with above and below water shots from different angles.
I taught myself to roll in an afternoon using that video on my laptop at the local beach.

HD video camera suggestions
Hey All, I am looking for suggestions for a small, durable video camera for use in my outdoor eduction class next semester. It doesn't need to be waterproof, just small, light, and able to take decent quality video. The kids will be using it to record our activities and create mni documentaries abou...

paddlin with yakkers
If I didn't paddle with kayakers, I would have no one to paddle with at home.
It challenges me to run the same lines they do, and it blows them away when I style a line they fumbled on.
They are great guys to paddle with and the beer is always cold at the take out, so who cares what they paddle

try Canadian Canoe Routes site
The CCR web site has a great routes section and board to get accurate, current info on wilderness trips. http://www.myccr.com/index.php In my area we have 3 spring runs; The Dog (University), Pukaskwa and Cascade rivers that have excellent whitewater, are very remote, and drive in/out access if you ...

saddle position?
James,
You mentioned moving the saddle forward to balance the boat for you.
Can you elaborate o how you determined this? I have a L'Edge coming shortly and have no experience adjusting bulkhead outfitting.

Re: Practice
If I am washing into a ledge upside down, I try to keep my body floating as high as possible, outstretched horizontally over the shallow rocks. If I am flushing into another ledge, I try to roll before my blade or body touch rock. If I am late, I push off the bottom and try to return to my center. ...

flip on purpose in the runout below rapids, in wave trains, at the entrance to rapids, in the middle of rapids, wherever. obviously, start with places you are comfortable with, and gradually flip in places you are less and less comfortable being upside down. also a pump makes intentionally flipping...

Re: Practice
- If you miss the first attempt, hang out for 5+ seconds and let your boat catch up to the speed of the water. Jim had the composure to paddle his upside-down boat to the end of the hole that would flush him out and THEN he rolled. Hanging around like that requires confidence that you will have a w...

Rolling in the gnarly stuff
Over the last year I have progressed my skills to a point where I am running alot of CIV; steep technical stuff and high volume stuff. In CIII my roll is solid, let's say 90-95% dependable. In larger rapids I am having trouble hitting my roll. I seem to get knocked around by the currents when I am t...

paddling the Ottawa
Jim, The Ottawa is run by open boaters all the time. The middle channel is best for someone learning. The Main channel is for experienced open boaters who know the lines. The OWL rafting put-in is open for public use and puts you on the river on the main channel above McCoy's, the first major rapid....
