Mad River Liberty

Anybody familiar with the Mad River Liberty? I’m in the market for a river touring boat that I can use for canoe camping class II whitewater. I found a deal on a Liberty and wonder if it will work for me. I am 5’7” and 180 lbs.

Re: foot pegs - or no pegs?

I use shin blocks. They support my lower leg and position my feet and ankles for the foot pegs and can also relax my feet outside the pegs. No more foot cramps.

Re: Thoughts on Esquif Blast??

I raced a Blast tandem once and felt completely out of my element. It felt like there was zero initial stability. That said a buddy and his wife have been racing one successfully for years.

Re: Any Alaskans on Here?

i guess I should include the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon, and Northwest Territories since I could pass through them on the way up and back.

Re: Ash Gunnels

Thanks, are you reading this Kaz?
Sounds like in the the not too distant future, ash is going the way of royalex. The emerald ash borer is making it’s way across the country and land owners are harvesting their ash while they still can.

Ash Gunnels

Who needs ash gunnels and/or thwarts? A friend of mine owns a small custom millwork shop here in Northern Wisconsin. He’s made up gunnels for me and a few friends and was wondering if there would be enough of a market to go into full production. He feels like he could easily compete with the retaile...

Re: Any Alaskans on Here?

Cool. We are heading North in early June and have to be home the end of August. No itinerary what so ever. We will treat every day as a new adventure. Is there camping and other other exploring we could do in the area? We may just show up and hang out for a bit if that's OK.

Any Alaskans on Here? Or Canadians along the Route?

I am planning on driving to and exploring Alaska by car next summer. I'll be taking my OC1 and am looking for any recommendations for road accessible class II-III. Even back road accessible as I am driving a capable 4x4. Also where are good whitewater hangouts, festivals, races, etc. I am towing a s...

Re: Paddle alone?

I started paddling alone only because I have days off during the week when no one else is around. But I soon found that I really enjoyed it. I am more focused. I'm on my own schedule, and I can take as long as I want studying a drop or practicing a move. I don't have to wait my turn for a play spot....

Re: Royalex is dead?

Why not mold a boat out of foam like they use for pool noodles. No need for outfitting, just carve out the cockpit to fit. No leaky air bags. When you hit a rock, it just scrunches and absorbs the impact. It would be very light weight and cheap. You could even bore holes to keep your favorite bevera...

Re: Pictures and techniques for cutting down a Royalex boat

How much do you want to cut off? I took my Ocoee down 1" in the center and 1 1/2" at the ends. I clamped a wood gunnel (longer than the boat) to the hull to get a smooth line and marked it. Used a saber saw to cut it. I went from vinyl to 3/4 inch wood gunnels and aluminum thwarts and knocked 12 lbs...

Re: Nice Bell Ocoee & A Few Canoe Paddles FS/FT

I'm pretty sure the Edge paddle can be cut down. I have the same paddle in a 56" and really like it on rocky rivers.
