Speaking of paddle length...

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I think we can all agree that personal preference plays a big role in what paddle length we decide on. My problem is that I am new to Open boating this year and because of my limited experience am not really sure what I prefer. I have a couple of questions that...

Thanks!

Thanks so much for the input. I really appreciate y'all taking the time to give me some advice based on your experience. I am going to shop around and see how much each option will cost. I may have more questions after I look around. Thanks again!!

It's getting cold, what should I wear?

Total newbie question, but it's getting cold even here in GA. What do you recommend wearing while paddling an OC in cool weather/water this fall. I am thinking the NRS farmer Johns. (3mm). They fit like overalls though, what should I wear on top? What about for my feet? I'd like something that I cou...

To answer the original question... when I took my beginner WW canoe class (OC-2) back in june the instructor told us to grip the paddle with one hand on the throat and one just below T-grip. When resting paddle shaft on top of head with that grip elbows should be bent at 90 degrees. Obviously that i...

Re: Thanks

NRS makes a great "tower" system that attaches to a vehicles rain gutter. They are cheap and are compatible with 2x4s or their cheap cross bars. The problem is that they must attach to rain gutters but dont work with the yakima/thule "artificial" raingutters. You mean the Quick-n-Easy's? Sure they ...

Thanks

Thaks for the ideas. I am really looking for a way to use 2x4's as crossbars. My problem is that I have no rain gutters on the camper shell. Yakima and Thule make "artificial" rain gutters that bolt on to the top of the shell so you can use their towers/crossbars. NRS makes a great "tower" system th...

Homemade Rack for Camper Shell. Ideas?

I have a toyota tacoma with a leer camper shell. I have crossbars over the cab, but they are only wide enough for one canoe. I need to be able to carry 2 canoes. I was thinking about leaving the existing crossbars over the cab and adding something homemade over the camper shell. Any ideas? There are...

Insecure

I think most of them are insecure. Everyone I've met who is into paddling (kayaks or canoes) are either really cool or really lame. Luckily almost everyone I have met this summer as I have been learning to paddle a WW canoe have been great! I am so appreciative for the support I have gotten. As far ...

Need to promote cboating? How?

Reading through some of the recent "discussions" left me a bit discouraged. As someone new to cboats (former kayaker, new to OC2 this summer) some of the posts got me thinking. I have really enjoyed the laid back, chill, personalities of all the nice people that have helped me learn about, and exper...

Open Canoes on Int'l Trips?

This is the 3rd time I have tried to post this in about 5 minutes, so if they all show up at once, I apologize. I would love to take a paddling trip this winter (or next) to maybe Ecuador or Costa Rica to paddle some class II/III. I have found some great trips but it seems that I can only rent a raf...

Thanks So Much!

Wow, this is so much great information. I am anxious to get a couple of the books y'all referred to. At this point I have been in the stern, but I think it would be valuable to at least switch it up a bit on some flat water to see how it goes and better understand what the other paddler is doing. I ...

If you were an OC-2 Instructor...

First of all, thanks for all the advice is prior threads. I would consider myself a trained beginner (OC-2) I started with a beginner weekend class a few weeks ago and have paddled about 6 times since then on class 2 WW. I am really enjoying it and reading as much as possible and watching as many vi...

Thanks again.

After reading the helpful posts, I just did some measuring. Keep in mind I am paddling a tandem Probe 14. My seat is only about 7 5/8'' high in the front and is probably 8.5''high toward the back (not including the "backrest"). As far as width... it is more narrorw toward the front (8'') and gets wi...

Thanks for the tips, I will try to experiment around with some temporary fixes to see if I can get more comfortable. I'd like to figure out a way I can alternate between kneeling using the foot pegs and kneeling with the tops of my feet against the hull. I guess in both cases, ankle blocks would hel...

Saddle Height (question about comfort)

I am new to the sport. I realize the importance of good outfitting (good fit) when it comes to good control of your boat. During the two day WW canoe class I took I also realized it is not exactly comfortable for me to kneel for extended periods of time. I am trying to find a good balance between go...
