Many in BC frown on, or even mock, tandem cross-bows for eddy turns, even though they've worked well everywhere forever - I've heard that discussion many times between people from BC and Ontario. Wouldn't surprise me if the bow pry you saw was the paddler from BC, though I'll bet the boat was still...

Whatever gets you down the river! As long as you are having fun it's all good. For me the pain and agony of a C-1 just wasn't worth it. I have far more fun in my open canoe or kayak and I am a much more proficient paddler in either of them then I was ever going to be in a C-1. To each his own. -Don

Forget the C-1!

Pat, I went through the same process that you are going through right now when I thought I needed to get into a C-1. You would do well to learn from my painful experience and just skip the misery of the C-1 phase entirely and do your closed boating in a kayak. I eventually did learn to paddle a C-1 ...

Viper 12 x 2

I've got the Viper-12 Tandem. It was originally outfitted for 2 small adults, and it worked OK but was a bit wet. I have only ever used it with a kid paddling in the bow, and it is super fun. The saddles are as close together as possible, so I have to reach over top of the bow paddler to do a cross-...

Helium.

Believe it or not, I actually did try using Helium in the air bags of a whitesell piranha. Made no noticeable difference other than it leaked out faster. Live and learn....

I'd love to join you guys in the Koots. I can't commit yet but I'll keep in touch with Einar about what the plans are as they shape up. Skookumchuck is highly recommended at the right levels!

Contact Einar. He has paddled Skookumchuck in an open boat. I was in my Kayak right behind him and was very happy to see his combat roll work in the middle of a gnarly drop. I have run it a couple of times and your description is pretty accurate. We put on late on our first trip and didn't get off t...

I m fortunate to paddle with a good group of mostly kayaks and they re great people... but to claim that they would never say anything about canoeing in a load of sh!t... Maybe you live on a different planet.. I don't live on another planet but I do live in Canada. Maybe we're just a whole lot nice...

Why do canoeists trash-talk kayakers?

I’m trying to understand why canoeists trash-talk kayakers so much. I learned how to paddle in an open canoe and spent a good 10 years paddling a Viper 11 in class 3-4 at least twice a week. I have spent the last 15 or so years paddling a kayak (though not as often as I would like) so I think I have...

Good fear and Bad fear

I believe that there is 'good' fear and 'bad' fear. The 'good' type energizes you, sharpens your perception, and helps you focus. The 'bad' fear is debilitating and reduces your ability to react to your environment. 'Good' fear is part of almost every paddling trip I do. There is always a balance go...
