Re: The Great[ly Ignominious] C1 - OC1 Debate...

Ahh Conflict. We all knew this was coming. Here is my take as a strictly OC guy at this point. Big deal, C1/2 or OC1/2, it's the C not the O that makes us different. If we are going to start on the C vs OC debate then, like with pumps, we need to ask, are the new micro creek boats that can be ...

Re: What's the most forgiving beginner boat still made?

I'm likely getting into deep water here as a less seasoned paddler but my perspective is different because of that so here goes. I am not familiar with most of the rivers that you are running with your students so this is harder but there are some observations that I can make from my own experiences...

Re: Ok i have a newb question

White Water type saddles are WAY more comfortable and safer than kneeling thwarts in WW. I actually like to use a kneeling thwart but I much prefer a saddle. One thing that you need to know is that there is no one boat that is going to be able to do everything. You are talking about tandem then you ...

Re: What's the most forgiving beginner boat still made?

Just to add perspective here I'll chime in as a newbie with my experiences. I think that the shorter modern boats have both strengths and weaknesses for beginners, the biggest being hull speed vs ease of maneuverability. I went from a 15' tandem classic canoe (set up for solo) to a 9'6" StinkeyeX (t...

Re: Can someone school me on WW canoes please

I'm going to go with Sir Adam here. Get a ducky. They are actually quite fun and very stable, especially with kids and there is no getting trapped in one. I am a newbie for WW OC and my wife started kayaking at the same time. Based on my observations watching her learn compared to myself, I think th...

Re: How many new canoes have you bought lately?

Since mid 2010

New Canoe X 1
Built Canoe X 1
New Kayak X 2 (for my wife)

Would love to buy a new plastic canoe but alas my wife's Kayak buying is getting in the way. Now my daughter is campaigning for a boat too. Maybe I can talk her into a canoe.

Re: Why do Open boaters whine so much about kayakers??

This whole thing goes WAY back and I think that it really is mostly good natured. Heck, a friend of mine who started as an open boater, then c-1er and now is a kayaker (he can't kneel any more) who teaches kayaking makes fun of kayakers and boasts of the powers of single bladers. I have seen some OC...

Re: Do only women like purple boats?

Purple boats are an essential component to the whitewater boater creed that says:

"Colors MUST clash to the greatest extent possible".

Re: Wood gunnels?

Hey Bob, There are others here that are better equipped to answer this but I'll give it a try. The wood vs vinyl gunwale debate rages on. Basically it boils down to personal preference on this one, some swear by wood and some hate it. Note that on a Roylex boat you can get into trouble with wood in ...

Re: At the risk of this post being deleted....

I am relatively new to this world also but I find this to be the most user friendly and targeted place in the web for single bladers. The others (pnet and boater talk) have a lot of chatter that is hard to follow and not related in the least to my interests and I find the formatting of the forums mo...

Re: 2012 NBoP Armada... on the Cheat April 28th and 29th

Thanks Allen for the encouragement. I have been told that I would be the biggest disaster that Squirt Boating has ever seen :D so I am not sure if that is in the cards, though I guess that it is a lot like swimming and I'm ok with that. I'll keep following this thread for further updates. Thanks Again

Re: 2012 NBoP Armada... on the Cheat April 28th and 29th

Does the condition "upsidedownboatitis" count as a disability :-? ?

Thanks for the information. I am trying to make the scheduling work so that I can attend and meet some more folks in person. My only problem now is what to do with my spouse who likes to paddle on the dark side.

Hey All This MAY be a really dumb annoying question and I nearly just sent a PM to ask but I figure that are others out there who may have the same questions so here goes. Could someone please give a short overview of what this event consists of and who should plan on attending? I have looked at the...

Re: Drysuits

I was able to buy two kokatat GFER suits for my wife and myself last September on eBay for $850 (for both). There are a couple of western outfitters (this was an Alaskan sea kayaking school) that buy new dry suits every spring and sell them off like new in the fall. Our suits were really like new an...
