I completely agree with this statement. Hang on to your boat.cheajack wrote: I think that composite boats are most vulnerable when heading down river full of water without a pilot on board.

Re: Blink
Craig,
I posted my experiences because of the constant criticism I hear about composite boats being fragile. They can obviously be built to be super light and fragile or heavier and really durable. I have probably received a half dozen PM's or FB messages about my boat and all of them have ...

Re: Blink
But even then it won't be something to take on a creek with lots of barely wet slides and deliberate rock bashing unless you like to spend weekday evenings patching. Put a painter on it or carry a short length of rope to tie it up so it won't blow away while scouting :^)

Re: Salamander Throwbag?
I have the Rapidfire and like it. At first it seems a little bulky, but after a few minutes I don't even notice that its there. The bag ends up resting just above the back of my saddle. Sometimes if I lean back, I can feel it against the saddle but it hasn't been a problem. The Rapidfire throwbag ...

See you in Wausau Kaz.
Mike, are you gonna make it? How's your new boat coming along?

Re: Blackfly option airbag question
I have a Stinkeye. Similar to an Option. It's 8'8". I had 54" Harmony bags. They had the same problem you described, not filling out the boat near the wide end of the bag. The boat seemed to catch more water than it should when rolling.
I switched them out for some 48" bags from Mohawk. They fill ...

How about a composite Shaman from Hemlock Canoes? I have a royalite Shaman. It is fast and forgiving. A lighter composite version would be great.
I paddled around in Ed Powers Shacho a bit. I will have one in the future. But I don't know if I would want it as a boat for my 70 something Dad that ...

Re: Rolling in Holes
Keep Calm and Roll More... 95% of the time, it's about being willing to take a long, hard beating and just keep trying to roll, until the thrashing gets you into the outflow and straightens you up enough to roll...
Taking a beating is a massively overlooked skill and it's one which makes a big ...

Re: Rolling in Holes
Thanks everyone.
Part of my tucking forward is to keep from hitting my head. The 2 holes we have to work on this aren't particularly deep at the green water. Maybe I can tuck and then sweep in one motion. I think part of my problem is not being fluid. The hesitation to try to setup breaks the ...

Re: Rolling in Holes
Wow! That video makes me feel better. Phillip Prince getting worked. Granted he was on his offside and I'm still trying to figure out the onside.
The first few times I tried a windowshade roll to my onside, my body was left flailing under the boat. Completely disorienting. Didn't even know where ...

Rolling in Holes
So, I've been working on my roll a lot the last 6 months. I am basically 100% in moving class 2-3 right now. But when playboating (Open boat, Stinkeye) I am 50% if I try to roll in the boily outflow of the hole. If my boat sticks in the hole, I'm swimming every time. If the boat flushes out, I just ...

Re: Air Bags, post Gaia
I bought some lightweight Harmony bags recently from NOC. They claim to be a military grade nylon. They are 54". Someone told me that they are the old Voyageur bags, but I don't know.
I traded them to Ed Powers for some 48" Gaia bags that filled out my Stinkeye better. Ed was talking about putting ...

Re: Warm Feet
I paddled last night in 28F air temps in basically ice water. Thickest wool sock that Smartwool makes inside the drysuit boots. I wear NRS Hydroskin socks over the drysuit to protect it from rubbing inside my shoe. Then 5.10 Water Tennies (1 full size bigger) over the whole package. I was trudging ...

Re: Where to stay in Wausau?
I asked this same question last year.
Craig would have to confirm, but everyone camps in the grass near the takeout. It's kind of weird camping in a park right in downtown Wausau, but it was a good scene. Brand new bathroom facility there also!
