A caution on bulldozing. While bulldozing is usually best in light water I/II, dont recommend it in heavy water IV/V/IV. This personal act of stupidity (on my part) may help some of you stay out of trouble. So, I am paddling my C1O(Call it boat 1) in a good IV/V, with more to come, trying to Bulldoz...

Since you asked for "non-brilliant", I feel more than fully qualified to jump in here:) So for what it is worth: 1) Take handle off, insert air bag or foam in shaft. 2) I used to tie a string(small shock cord) to my bail bucket, BUT be sure it will break off if gets around your neck, etc.(Test it) D...

FOR SALE - CLASSIC - BLUE HAHN - NEVER PADDLED

I was able to eliminate a layer of FRP in the deck by including a transverse structural layer of Carbon Fiber reinforcement. Thus the boat is lighter than a normal layup boat but should be just as strong. I did not change the standard hull layup. Carbon Fiber was new and extremly rare at the time(ci...

The ultimate goal is to learn to hand roll. This is not a gimmick but a very real emergency back-up. While one of the cardnial rules is to never let go of your paddle, If you paddle enough big water you are going to loose it somwhere and most likely at a bad/violent spot where you need it most. A co...

I nave not paddled in 30 yr but had an absolute bullet proof roll when I did. In over 200 trips on 100 rivers, the biggest, baddest we could find mostly IV, V & VI, I never had to come out of my C1 boat. I was ripped from my OC1 and swam a couple times(Gauley Iron Ring comes to mind) but never my C1...

I want to thank everyone who has and will contribute to this thread I started. Not everyone is aware of the various very real hazards this and other rivers present. A good discussion of these hazards raises awarness and just might result in preventing a future tragedy like the one discussed here. If...

Maybe we should start a "DONT GO THERE" OR "KILL ZONE" OR "DANGER ZONE" page on this site. I know of at least 2 more such places on Sec IV where paddlers have died due to "death traps" ie not medical issues or poor outfitting, etc - Left Crack at Crack in The Rock - The manholes above Bull Sluice Ad...

re Wondering if you are familiar with this rapid and if anything has changed there since I did it 30yr ago. When I was paddling circa 1980, there was a strainer under the House Size rock, river right, in the middle of Jawbone Rapid, Sec IV Chattooga. A guy who paddled catch boat K1 for a raft compan...

Well done. I have not paddled in 30yr but went through the same thing, taught myself in a lake. Things have changed a lot since then but I think the basics are still the same. The pros in here will correct me if not. One thing that helped me was to understand that 90% of rolling a boat is in the hip...

Some quick thoughts about handles. Never could use a "Palm Grip" handle comfortably. Made my hand sore. Always used T grip. Wrap the grip with minicell foam, if you dont like it you can always remove it. That would also make it bigger. Paddling gloves worked for me. Low brace on a rock and bleeding ...
