Re: Boat repair
I had 105/207 on hand, but was concerned it wouldn't be flexible enough, and that I would need to order some GFlex. That's why I made some test pieces. My concerns were without basis, the 105/207 was plenty flexible. I'm sure GFlex is more flexible, it is certainly more expensive. But I didn't need ...

Re: Gorilla Glue injection?
One of the criticisms of epoxy is that it is too rigid for this application. I did some test pieces with West System 105 resin & 207 hardener. Some were just epoxy alone, of various thicknesses. Some had a layer or two of S glass. They were all quite flexible. I was convinced that 105/207 alone woul...

Re: Boat repair
This is a friend's Ocoee I'm refurbishing with all new wood and some hull repairs. In the "before" photo you can see that the hull is in decent but worn condition. There are three significant soft spots underneath the front edge of the saddle. The vinyl layer was worn thin at the stems and throughou...

Re: did Dagger steam bend Ocoee gunwales?
When taking off the old wood I was a bit surprised to find that Dagger used some type of adhesive to bond the outwales to the hull. The adhesive had completely failed, so removing the wood wasn't a problem. They also edge glued the decks to the inwales. That still had a little bond to it, but it was...

did Dagger steam bend Ocoee gunwales?
I'm replacing the wood on a friend's Ocoee, and was wondering if Dagger steam bent the original gunwales?

Re: Old Town Pathfinder Canoe
Old Town used the name "Oltonar" for Royalex for a while, in the early days of Royalex.

Re: Old Town Pathfinder Canoe
There should be a number on a metal plate, or stamped into the plastic. Call Old Town and see if they can tell you.
Or if you can post photos here someone may be able to tell.

Re: paddle shaft reinforcement question
I thought about Dynel sleeve, it would take about $2-3 dollars worth to do these two paddles. Sweet's minimum order is $25, plus I'd have to pay shipping. Buying more stuff to get to the minimum would be OK if I needed minicel, epoxy, Dynel cord, cloth, etc., but I already have a good stock of all t...

paddle shaft reinforcement question
Years ago I took a $35 Caviness Pro paddle, cut off the handle and made a nice T grip, put a Dynel/epoxy tip on the blade, and put 4oz Eglass & epoxy on the paddle faces. I coated the shaft and handle in epoxy. It was an experiment and I expected it to last about a year, but when it went floating aw...

Re: 18 foot custom cedar-strip refinish questions
In similar situations (on furniture, not boats), I take sanding dust and mix it with epoxy, in about a 50/50 ratio, and fill the defects/cracks/etc. It works really well, and if the color of the sanding dust matches the color of the surrounding wood, it blends in very nicely. It will take stain (but...
