get him an ion. im less than a month away from 15 and i love mine. much stabler than you would expect, and VERY maneuverable.
EDIT: oh, and if you can't find a boat, i have a probe 11 in asheville, NC that you could borrow for the week.

Re: Photos and Video from Canoeing in Costa Rica!
a couple of the drops in la paz looked semi-runnable with enough water when i was there. there are about 8 in there, 3 were runnable, 2 questionable, and the rest, well.... just plain ugly.

Re: Caption outfitting for Class III and up
put a third thwart in the middle and you could set up a double bulkhead. i paddled a caption once last year set up this way and loved it.

Re: contact cement in cold weather
last time i had to glue in some foam i applied it inside, 2 hours later onto the car in 40 degree weather, and paddled with it the next day. i had no problem with it not being at all uncured.

Re: Need a boat
where are you? btw- the probe 11/12 would work very well- stable, maneuverable, fast, etc. for a steeper learning curve, try the viper 11/12. more playful/edgy but harder to learn in. up to you and how much time you have and challenge you want.

Re: Pool Sessions: Chlorine and Paddling Gear
this just reminded me of something ive been meaning to ask here for a while- what about pumps? i am using the attwood tsunami 1200 and am concerned that pool water could damage it, and have been debating taking it out this winter when all of my paddling is pool sessions.

well, the ion certainly has sharp edges- it was designed as a comp. freestyle boat, after all.

Re: Creeking in an Ion (or anything small) vs. L'edge?
ive only paddled an ion on class 2 stuff, but it seemed to me that it would creek very well- it really does float over holes. boofs great, and is great for catching eddies. and did i mention it bounces off rocks well?
