Re: Time for a New Boat

Time for a new/another shout out to my favorite boat builder, Empty Canoes (formally MT Canoes). I am a rather biased spokesperson but John Gallagher builds great canoes!! I am a long time fan of the Dagger Ocoee and Caption designs. I have owned 1 Caption and 2 Ocoees in plastic (both history) and,...

Southeast paddling info

Hey all, I am traveling from Montana to Florida in the first half of January for work with the Whitewater Rescue Institute. Might have a little time and ability to deviate from the most direct route, for some paddling. Any suggestions for this time of year? Anyone able to show two of us around? Like...

Re: Documenting the Shasta River Canyon

No, only Monday through Friday... We worked some long days on the North Fork of the Feather, training with BNSF and other entities near Belden Town. We did make time for a Tobin run Wednesday evening. Short but really fun and fairly challenging. Fortunately, I had two expert kayakers along to look a...

Re: Documenting the Shasta River Canyon

I will be down your way from May 14th to the 18th for work. Might have time to paddle in the evening or possibly one free day. Not sure where we are staying just yet. Any availability to show me a local run?

Re: Twister Vs. Edge Thoughts from the Experts

Hey Rob, Did you try contacting Jenny Goldberg from the League of the Northwest? She may remember who bought my Defiant at the Cedar race more than a few years ago. Another person that was there and talked to the guy was Marc Leonard. I can attempt to contact him to see if he has a clue who it was. ...

Re: Looking for OC-1 in CA

Valhallalongboats, I owned a Millbrook Defiant that I bought new in '99. Shortly after, I bought my first of 4 Ocoees and rarely paddled the Defiant. When I sold it to a guy near Seattle around 2010, it was still in very good condition. I would guess that the guy did not paddle it much. I would not ...

Re: Looking for OC-1 in CA

I would acknowledge that both your height and weight are pushing the reasonable limits of the Ocoee. Among the dozen or so Montana OC1ers that paddle an Ocoee, several are 6'3" or more and one guy is probably over 235lbs. Living in the home state of Montana Canoes, we are almost all paddling Kevlar ...

Re: Option vs. maxim

Wendy- Just to be clear, I don't have a MO but have jumped in one numerous times over the last two seasons. Also, some background: I owned 2 plastic Ocoees since around 2000 then transitioned to my 2 FHs in the last 5 years. I am 6'3" and around 190-195. Though I am one of the oldest OC1ers in the l...

Re: Option vs. maxim

Since the Echoee was mentioned, I will put in a plug for my buddies at MT Canoes. They are doing a version of the Ocoee called the FH, after Frankie Hubbard. They also do a version called the MO (modified Ocoee) which is 15" shorter. I have one of the lightest FH's at 19 pounds and another around 30...

Re: MT Canoes' website is up! For real this time!

As one of their best customers, I will post here again, on the awesome MT Canoes! Amazing quality and such a pleasure to paddle AND carry up the take out trail! My SS weighs less than my old plastic/ash Ocoee. Speaking of my SS, I need to get them a better photo of my boat for the gallery. The Germa...

Re: More exciting times for canoeing!

I retrieved my SS2 from MT Canoes last October with such haste that they didn't have a chance to get a photo. Here is my new Achtung Baby! Those that know me from slalom nationals may remember my blue dagger caption. Well used but still in solid condition. It was the sacrificial hull for the mold. I...

Re: Boat for Grand Canyon

I assume you are flying to Flagstaff or relatively close to Lee's Ferry? I have loaned my canoe out for Middle/Main Salmon Idaho trips, but I am in Western Montana. I don't know of any open boaters close to the G.C. Are you renting rafts and doing food through an outfitter in Flagstaff? They might h...

More exciting times for canoeing!

Hey all you Ocoee and Caption fans out there! MTCanoes is now officially up and running! Their shop is a show place in itself and the boats coming out the door, are works of art. Check out the home page and gallery at http://www.mtcanoes.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; John and Je...

Re: Maxim, Atom C-1, and Cascade C-1 for sale

Possibly interested in Atom. I live near Missoula, Montana. Leaving early Monday for Northern Calif. by way of I-80 to Hwy 97 and south through Bend and on to the Feather River. It is a work trip so I don't have the ability to deviate from that route. Any chance of getting the boat to some town on t...
