Question

You commin' to Ain't Louie Fest this year? If so, I know someone who would be very interested in this boat. I know it's a long ways away from you, but thought I'd ask anyway. Let me know.

I use an Astral 300R. It's a gret low profile Type V vest. The low profile is nice and does not (IMO) affect paddle strokes and/or rolling at all. I like the fact that the floatation is not focused around the chest. Great Vest!

Squeaky Knee, I paid around $1400 for my Zephyr. NOC was runnin' a sale at the time. This included the bulkhead outfitting.

I agree with cheajack. Find a Cascade and go from there. They are really easy to paddle and roll. Much easier to roll than an open boat (IMO). Plus, Cascade's are usually fairly easy to find and cheap ($300 or so).

The way you described the situation, I would go with the offside powerstrokes. When executing the strokes, I would be sure to lean on my right edge.

Trey,

I've been busy with my pregnant wife, now two week old baby boy and 2 yr old son. The only thing we've been paddling is the upper green, nothing else has really run close to Asheville recently. Adam's been boatin almost every weekend. Hope your doing well.

I have always found the Probe 12 II to be a boring boat to paddle (however it's a very easy boat to paddle). I have also found it to be really wet in class 3+. You may want to also consider an Esquif Zephyr. I love mine. If your sold on Mohawk boats, I would spend the extra cash if you have it and o...

Here's a few to consider... Mad River Outrage X (the regular Outrage maybe too edgy for you) Mohawk boats; Viper 12, Probe 12 (Viper will be more edgy) Esquif boats; Nitro, Blast Dagger boats; Impulse, Rival (Rival will be the more advanced option). Ofcourse the dagger boats will be harder to find. ...

I agree...C is my answer. You have to be a little aggressive when it's crowded.

I should add that Leland's book is almost worth buying just to check out the photo of Steve Fraizer running Big Falls on the Elk in a big butt open boat. Looks like an encore maybe. The book organized very nicely by escarpment, so you can see your options based on were the rain fell.
