Bow to the river

My first rule of rolling: Get into postition, then before the snap drop the left shoulder as far as possible (if yer coming up on the right side of boat, reverse for lefties). Ya need to have your shoulders horizontal for the best shot at a good roll. If I adhere to my own advice I do well... Bow to...

I've had arthroscopic knee surgery

Paddling seems to have made the knee stronger, I have no pain in that knee when I paddle though it might be just dumb luck. If you go through with the surgery, get the very best doc available to you. I've had a couple surgeries at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, no more expensive than any other, an...

Why bother trying?

Your body is telling you not to do that position, listen to your body. Mine spine is fused at L5-S1, I paddle c-1, A LOT, if I paddled a boat w conventional seat I'd need to be injected w demerol and hauled away in an ambulance, had that issue even before fusion. Your back does not like that positio...

Gallatin in MT

Lots of water to paddle here in June, the Gallatin is good, some 2-3, and a good 4 section, easy shuttle, easy to hitch a ride, very accessable, and not far out of your way. When you go through the first mountain pass, you're in the neighborhood.

Aquaseal

Used it a number of times on the old Bandits. No problem, even after years of paddling. Wore the blade on one paddle down to almost nothing, aquaseal still holding. And it does not leak. Tried epoxy without succcess.

I carry a Lotus

I carry a Lotus with 70 ft of 5/16 spectra. Small compact bag, fits nicely into my c-1, enough line to get out into the river, and no stretch. If lotus were still in biz I'd buy another one just to have it. In the middle of the runoff a few years ago, a yakker was stuck behind a boulder in the middl...

I've paddled an Inazone

I've paddled an Inazone c-1, on class three, it was a nice ride in spite of it being a 220 and me weighing around 180 with my gear on (but the pedestal was very low, 4 inches). Seems to me a 230 c-1 would be sweet at your weight. I'd definitly go for it. As mentioned you might need to amputate the k...

Wavesport Z, or maybe X

If you do go c-1, WS Z might be a good size for you, flat bottom, 200# no problem. Or even the smaller X might work, it'll carry 200. They should be easy to find, easy to convert, cheap, and make good c-1s.

East of Missoula a few hours, the Gallatin

If you're driving in from the east, the Gallatin at Bozeman is definitely worth the stop (great easy access, and diverse paddling levels on different sections). Also, there's the Beartrap Canyon on the Madison, check it out before you run it, Kitchen Sink can get quite big at higher flows. On the Ye...

Keep your shoulder low low low

If you roll up on the rt side of the boat, drop your left shoulder as low as possible before snap. If yer on lft side of the boat, rt shoulder low low low. I have a friend who keeps doing the high-brace roll, and going to the doctor for shoulder pain. :-?

Scull the paddle

Scull the paddle, when you feel it on the surface, drop your left shoulder as low as it can go (If you're rolling up on the right side of the boat, right shoulder if left side of boat), as soon as you drop the shoulder, snap.

Bow to the river, and the river will let you up.

Looking for a child-size boat

I have little girl to shop for (age 6, fifty lb), who badly wants to be in her own boat. Her 8-yr old brother is paddling my old XXX c-1, so I've run out of boats to give away. Any suggestions on where to look for a used Jackson-kids boat, or a Perception Jib, or some such?

Thanks,
Dennis

Footwear/Booties

I've worn out my old NRS booties, I think they were called the "wetshoe", they've been long ago discontinued. I need some serious flexability to get into my c-1s and be comfortable. Any recommendations on what to try for new footwear.

Thanks, 8)

Floatation vest?

My old Lotus vest is getting a bit worn, it might be about time for a new pfd. Any recommendations? 8)
