Re: Mad River Howler for big water (Grand Canyon)?

I'm 170 lbs. I paddle a Zoom (not a Wooz when I'm in it :P ) and an InaZone 240 C1. I'm not looking for or needing a babysitter boat. That said, I don't have a lot of big water experience. Mad River Howler for big water (Grand Canyon)?

Would the Howler make a good big water boat ( solo oufitted), up to and including the Grand Canyon?

How would it compare to a solo outfitted Caption for this use?

Galasport 3M heavy layup. Carbon/Kevlar weave. Aluminum tip - no mushrooming problems. I have not used a paddle with a better feel than this model. They are about $270 depending on the exchange rate, worth every penny. (purchased from Maximum Whitewater Performance. see paddling links) I have two of...

They work in all of my boats except the c1s with race style cockpits. The heals will hang up on the rim potentially hindering escape. If ...

Sale items and 20% off coupons disqualify the dividend at REI.
Not a big deal as the dividend is around 10% for cash/check and 8% if you use a card.

I've got three swims in so far, and I'm gonna cop the "it was not my boat excuse" although the season is not over and I'm sure I have a few more coming my way. I had borrowed a Prelude to surf the lunch spot hole on the NB, all the while thinking I'm probably going to swim out of this boat. 1 down. ...

Keep it simple. Use your finger.

Yea, yea, I know it's bad for you. But you are probably only doing a couple of installs a year at best, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Another vote for Weldwood.
Double coat the foam and the straps, letting them dry to the touch between coats. You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to accelerate the dry time. Just be careful.

It should stay put for quite awhile.

Install bolts from the back of the footpeg. Put the nuts (and lock washers or use nyloc nuts) inside of the plastic triangle. You should have plenty of room to get a finger in there to start the nut. If not, use a box end wrench with a piece of duct tape covering the wrench opening to stick the nut ...
