1.7 %

Sadly to say, I'm afraid that's right. But hey, try being C-1W. As someone (I believe Ed Gertler) famously said ""Rare, seldom seen, frequently rumored to be non-existent..." not for nothing is our symbol the graceful Unicorn of C-1W But is it pretty sad, as the deluge of "Just a minute & you will b...

Another comment

To all the well-founded comments & replies posted here, I would like to add one more: find a good physiatrist (aka Physical Medicine specialist). I tend strongly to Sports Med specialists-- whether MD, physical therapists, or whatever, because obviously they specialize -- and they "get it". (Ie, the...

Lefty C-1

I'm right-handed, paddle lefty. When I was learning, most of the top guns (Jon, Davey, etc) were leftys, so maybe that had something to do with it, but over the years I've decided that having the dominant hand on the T-grip is a major advantage. The major disadvantage is that when everybody else pad...

Posting for Bob Horlacher

I also received this comment from Bob Horlacher -- a member of Post 32, and am adding it with his permission. (Gotta love those acetone fires!!) Boat building became an integral part of the sport... " Yes the still images starting at #60 are of Explorer Post 32 State College PA. I can identify most ...

Posting for Dave Kurtz..

I'm posting this for Dave Kurtz, who said he had problems getting his login accepted... "OK, I looked at the stills and have the following This film was probably taken by Ernie Schmidt in about 1963 or 64 (which corresponds to Bobs estimate below... it contained the C-1 decked boats we had starting ...

Woo-hoo -- no helmets!!!

I'm guessing the race footage to be Brandywine.

Somebody has to recognize these faces.

Has Dave Kurtz seen any of this??? Bet he would know....

vintage film

not sure it is the same film, but I do remember a film (possibly the "Original" "Give us a River") had a mag soundtrack; I remember Dick Bridge showing it at a CCA meeting. The first couple of minutes were shredded. It was pretty vintage; dating back to the days of the State College Boy Scouts; firs...

paddle size

Don't forget to consider blade size as well. You are within a relatively "average" size for slalom, so perhaps this is not an issue, but if different paddles "feel" more or less comfortable, take a look at the blade size as well as the total length, & also whether your stroke rate changes. For every...

Excuse me...

But how can you have an issue called 'single blades' without showing a single C-1 or C-1? All the single blades I saw were propelling OC's or rafts. That's fine, I'm glad to see OC's get some well-deserved press, but hey, my "real boat" is still a "real" C-1. Those kye-ackers at AW don't have a clue.

Er, how about...

First C-1 -- Bill McKnight Hahn, giant Norse paddle (this boat once flew off Paul Flack's father's Mercedes, bounced around in the road & was none the worse for wear) First cheat canyon run: tandem grumman, presiding trip leader was Andy Bridge's grandfather. If you were finicky, your new C-boat cam...

Greatest paddling film ever..

Beautifully done it catches the emotions of the moment & the spirit of the time perfectly. Yes, that's a great scene where you can just see Cathy starting to light up the afterburners.... Plus you can watch over & over forever & still find something new. For starters -- can you spot Bill Hearn in th...

slalom & wildwater seem to be different

Agreed that most of the "kings" of slalom are/were not switchies -- I believe that switching pretty much went out with upturned ends. The advent of "max" boats with flat bows made cross-strokes much more accessable and the advantages of mastering cross-strokes outweighed mastering switching. Altho m...

Just curious.

Used to like them in C-2. where you aren't as snug to the sidewalls. Don't know about C-1
