Re: Changing Sides
As a lefty C-1 (and bow-person opportunity permitting I would say that one of the most useful practices of my career was many hours spent paddling flatwater miles on stretches of the local (narrow!) flat canal, trying to keep a straight line with minimal correction. It can be totally frustrating. On...

Re: Changing Sides
I am right handed and paddle "left" -- I believe it is the natural default because blade angle is controlled by the upper hand, and hence for the right-hand dominant "lefty" paddler the "fine control" is coming from the dominant-side hand.

Great club with great OC-1 tradition, more K-ers now but still a really great club. They can answer any paddling Q's. Plent of reat paddling in the area.

Re: Build your own boat, composite
All my respect and admiration. ... another designer-builder in the fold! I date back to the olden days of "if you want a boat you have to build it"-- and the DC Teen-age Ninjas of C-1. I'm too old to handle plastic -- and now that plastic hit a bump in the road -- temporary to be sure, but enough to...

I was intrigued by the possibility of tryng the "kneeling bench" mentioned previously, but not to the extent of purchasing one. However a search turned up this neat project that should be within the skill-reach of most of us. Might be a good winter project.... http://www.michiganbuddhist.com/seiza/"...

OK here are some rambling thoughts which are I hope not OT but more a 90-degree angle... First, how certain are you that your knee pain is entirely bad cartilege & how much tight muscles restricting flexibility. When I took some Yoga classes 2 years ago I was shocked at the differences in flexibilit...

Re: Off side roll.
OK, as a veteran C-2bow, my take is a little different, but here is: I am primarily a lefty. At one time, being in a work situation where I had small lake-beach access during my lunch hour, once I had my onside roll cold, I decided to learn to roll on my offside. I wasn't much of a righty, but wante...

Re: behind the knee bulge
No joke! Definitely see a doc -- & I always recommend someone with a sports med specialty because they are usually more understanding of people who don't want to lie around indefinitely. I had a popliteal cyst in conjunction with major meniscus damage. It was not nice. I suspect that such a cyst qui...

Yeah, back when -- you headed for the Cheat/WVa in the spring with boats AND skis on the roof!

Re: Early paddling video
Great footage! Before my time, but not by that much: there were still some "elders" around from that era whose technique was reminiscent, and I remember movies (no video then!) and books showing similar techniques. Have to admit I enjoyed watching the endholers, I actually started in one, but fell i...

Re: Boat of the Week - Hahn
My first C-1 was a Hahn, built by Bill McKnight in DC. McKnight boats were highly prized at the time: mine was extremely light but very flexy, & could take a lot of punishment. (I believe McKnight "guaranteed it as long as you don't swim out".) I am not sure of the exact mold, but it had a very flat...

R. Lugbill's Blog
Been following R. Lugbill's new blog. Focussed on racing/training, but very well written with a lawyer's eye for detail and analysis (no surprise there). Even those not interested in slalom can find useful info on many aspects of technique and/or off-the-water performance training in general, as wel...
