Go for it

There will be a learning curve with the Slasher but it is worth it. I weigned about 230 pounds when I started paddling a Slasher to train for slalom. The boat was edgy and I spent a LOT of time on flat/easy water getting used to it. The practice paid off, as I now weigh 185 pounds and I am pleased w...

AB

Looks great!

Let me know when I can pre-order my copy.

Do not blame the publishing date on the races- I expect to see you working on a lap top between runs. Good luck!

Safety

Like Chuck- I when I am in a C-1 prefer a dry-top. Just remember, as was posted in a different thread a couple of weeks ago, that the ability to participate in some rescues will be severly limited if you are not wearing a full dry suit.

Have fun out there.

Learnt sumthin'

I learned that good paddlers are amazingly good, and I still cannot figure out how they do it. I went to the OC Nationals for the first time and there were lots of people who could just fly down a river with great finesse. Wow- there's lots for me to learn. I also learned that Nationals are a GREAT ...

Prowler

I recommend a Millbrook Prowler. Paddled solo it will dance through the class 3-4 stuff and stay dry, Kaz lays these up really strong, and it is a great boat for taking a kid along. It is not a traditional tripper and the rocker makes for a better whitewater play boat, rather than a boat that eats u...

Moose???

Jim: You are always welcome here. I just need to be careful about my wife around you. . . every time Jim is around she swoons. She has this thing about the time they spent togeher in West Virginia. He took her to places that I have never been able to, and she still gets excited over the memory of it...

The life of Michaud

Not only is "I now keep my Outrage-X stored in Flagstaff, Ariz. and only use it for Grand Canyon trips" worth quoting, the amazing thing is that Jim will probably wear that boat out before some of us wear our boats out. Ahhh, only another couple of decades until I can start considering a nice life o...

Nah

Alden: I like the summer suggestion for setting up an environment that encourages participation in races. FYI- the house choice came down to my wife asking my son which he liked best and he said "I don't know, the last one had a pool and a barn, but this one had snakes and frogs." We bought the hous...

More thoughts. . .

I think the challenge for new racers is that if you have a recreational boat that is not fast and agile it is really hard to run a course, but if you try getting into a race boat it does feel intimidating. It is too bad it is not easier to start, as the New England race crowd is very supportive. Hec...

Nah

No, the Slasher rim is similar to the Gyramax rim and you can use the same skirt for both. The Atom/Cascade skirt is for a larger cockpit.

Pat

Pat- you were a natural as chief judge- thanks for all the hard work. It is too bad about the scoring system- my problem was the dam thing was accurate! I was fast and sloppy- if you guys could have just missed one of my many touches I would have been in the medals. But nooo, the scoring team was ac...

Alden is back!

I was thinking that things were pretty tame on here without Alden stirring things up with provocative questions. Welcome back, glad the shoulders are better. OC Nationals were great- as a first-timer I loved it. Great venue, tough course, and beer was provided by Esquif (except that we were in Canad...

Trip story

My favorite story about a self-supported trip in an OC is at http://www.americanwhitewater.org/journ ... _4_036.jpg

I recall another good article on the “Trans-Baffin Challenge” that involved a C-1, but I cannot find it on the AWA site.

Enjoy!

Lever arm

Long paddles can give you a longer lever arm (if you use it). That can be good (more power from the stroke) or bad (more forces applied to your arms and shoulders).

I am 6' tall and usually use a 58" paddle in C-1 and a 60" paddle in the OC.

End-hole C-2

I have an old Millbrook end-hole C-2 that still gets used occasionally. I bought this from John Berry around 1991. It was the boat he had paddled with his daughter and it had many years on it at the time. I do not recall that there is any information glassed in that will tell me when it was made, bu...
