I do my share of stern prys... .. . when I have to. Otherwise I'll stick to forward correction strokes. Let's take the case of avoiding a rock or hole. A forward correction stroke will not only turn the boat but will also draw you away from the danger. A stern pry will only turn the boat so it must ...

Many, many blue moons ago PBS-TV showed a film called "Whitewater PA". It was almost all film clips of boating class IV in the Ohio/West Virginia area. I've been wishing all along that I could get to watch it again. It's what got me firmly hooked into whitewater paddling beyond my local rivers.

In the east it's a toss up between the Upper Yough and the Big Sandy. If the Big Sandy is up while I'm in the area I almost always paddle it instead of the UY because it doesn't run as often. IMO the best overall repeat river is the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Over the last two decades ...

Sticking the handle in boiling water should do the trick if the T-grip is held in place with glue. I tried to remove the T-grip from my Mitchell using boiling water but it didn't work because it was held in place with epoxy. I ended up cutting the shaft close to the handle then chipping the epoxy wi...

I almost always did real well once I was in the middle of the gnar. My problem was to psych myself up to enter the gnar. As I approached something nasty I would keep telling myself "it's only class III, it's only class III". When I hit the point of no return I would get highly focused and paddle my ...

1954. Went on a week-long Boy Scout canoe trip in the New York Adirondacks. After I bought a house in 1967 I now had a place to store a canoe so I immediately bought a 15-foot Grumman (with lake keel) and it's been whitewater ever since.

Toluene or Xylene is way more gentle to ABS and vinyl and it does a fantastic job of dissolving contact cement. I do try to roll the contact cement off while dry first if it comes off fairly easy.

As a side benefit they can be used as Aquaseal accelerator.

A kayaker's biggest fear is that they'll be spending too much time rescueing a swimming canoeist and unpinning the canoe. If you can roll the canoe or hardly ever swim the kayakers definitely won't mind your paddling with them. Having bilge pumps in the canoe will help too because they won't have to...

Mitchell all carbon. Srongest and lightest paddles that I've ever owned.

The worst paddles I've ever owned is anyting with an aluminum shaft. I've had many aluminum shafts snap in half near the blade.

I use to be jealous of the southern paddlers because they had the Ocoee to paddle all summer while us poor slobs up north had nothing comparable. Now we have the Deerfield.

Thanks, AW!

Bib dry pants is what my friend was wearing when he drowned. Since the top of the pants are loose fitting lots of water was forced into the pants. Can't say that I would recommend bib dry pants.
