Rare Whitesell Whirlwind in mint condition

... kept indoors it does not appear to be the least bit brittle and the plastic flexes like new. It is red with aluminum gunnels and thwarts. The only departure from Whitesell "factory" outfitting is an improvement: It has a wide and comfy mini-cell saddle and bulkhead rather than the heavier plastic ...

Re: Mysterious C1

... Sir Adam is, as far as I know, right, all the composite Massive boats have been built by Ed at Murky Waters. Ed still has all the molds, an Air or departure anyone ;-) ? Sir Adam is also right about the composite vs. plastic Groove. I have a plastic one, and while I have never been able to try ...

Re: Other wood species for gunwales

I'm surprised nobody mentioned cherry which I've seen used on alot of canoes. I also used Sassafrass on the Departure because it takes a crazy bend nicely. Just be careful and wear an N95 mask- that nutmeg smell is carcinogenic.

Re: Boat(s) of the week --- MASSIVE AIR & DEPARTURE

Thanks for explaining the differences Ian. I have never seen a D1, but a Departure 2. An Open boat that can stern squirt is just too cool!

TGG!

Re: Boat(s) of the week --- MASSIVE AIR & DEPARTURE

The Departure 1 was about 10" deep amidships whereas the Departure 2 has that crazy gunwale line. The D1 had huge tumblehome whereas the high sides of the D2 had only about an inch ...

Re: Boat(s) of the week --- MASSIVE AIR & DEPARTURE

Murky will still make one if you want one:) I'd hoped to order one last year, but ended up helping a friend out instead. I've not paddled one, but great looking, light weight boats. I've heard more "performance" oriented (less stability than, say, a L'Edge...)... but given Ian's other designs this i...

Re: Designing my own boat, help please!

My article talks about a 'useable plug'- skipping the requirement for a mold. The idea here is to try the shape without investing too much time and money. The stripper is also an excellent technique. I designed the Departure using cedar strip as well as part of the Electro.
