Re: Stern "squirting" in a Cascade C1?
... Cascade for years, and he only "big" water I paddled in one was the lower Tuolumne and the warm up section of the NF Payette (Hounds tooth to below Otter Slide) so take this for what it's worth. I'm about 10 lbs lighter, and think that despite its weight and bulk, the Cascade responds better to being ...

... forget my solo :-?
Thanks for your help with the event, and good run (ya jerk!)!
And yes composite boats are light, crisp-feeling to paddle, and durable, I should get one. I wish Western/Clipper made Viper 11.5 - 11 is too wet, but 12 is too big. I should try Jenny's Hellman Otter.

Re: Solo Canoe Advice.
Last time I was in Whitehorse, a few years ago now, there was a Hellman Otter kicking around - you should track it down and try it. Can't recall whose it was, but I'm sure you could find it if you ask the likely suspects.

Yeah, I was there, nervous to backferry across the gentle class II Cheakamus in my new-to-me 14' Old Town Otter! That must've been circa 2001. And then Eli was in the neighbourhoodd last summer. That's basically been it for us. Though Roger & Allyson offer good courses and the local club serves it's ...

I'm about your size, sadly a little heavier, and FWIW my last boat search was narrowed down to the Viper 12, L'Edge, Ocoee or Hellman Otter. Many other small/modern boats I find just don't carry my weight well enough or are too wet.

You've obviously never been to Gatineau Fest! People run through the meat of Lucifer's in worse than that! Think old flatwater canoes with no flotation, otter-tail paddles, and bike helmets...

Re: Splash guard for Viper??
... try a different hull than the Outrage, the Ocoee was the way I went, also considered the Viper 12, L'Edge and would be interested to try a Hellman Otter. That's still pretty much the line-up for heavy guys, with most of course going for the newer, plastic L'Edge.

Hellman Canoe makes the Otter, it is super light, really tough... Not the fastest boat out there, but not a pig. If you get it with wood gunnels, it is quite a good boat!

The biggest issue as was explained to me is keeping the battery dry, and an Otter case plus a good dose of McGuyver (sp?) seems to work. I took it out on S9 of the FB at 3K and had no issues with juice. Next week is the Noli ...
