Re: Blue hole canoe

Its a Blue Hole Cumberland. Same hull as the Starburst, but with vinyl gunnels. Steve Scarborough design. Several other builders have also produced this great(est?) whitewater tandem tripper: Evergreen Starburst, Esquif Canyon, Nova Craft Moise.

You’re lucky to have it. Don’t sell it, paddle it!

Old Town Cascade - In search of

My dad is selling his kayaks and is in search of an Old Town Cascade. Anyone have one they'd like to let go of for fair compensation? I'm also in search of a Blue Hole Starburst. I guess it's that time of year to sell/buy or trade.

Thank you kindly.

Re: "best" tripping boats?

... installed. The OC-A (Open Canoe, Model A) became the OC-B. Likewise the OC17-A became the OC17-B with wood instead of Aluminum. And when the Starburst wore wood gunnels...it was called the Cumberland. Not many ash-gunnel Starbusts were made, so there are very few Cumberlands out there. Why ...

Re: "best" tripping boats?

Makes sense about it being the vinyl gunwale version. All the ones I have seen are the aluminum gunwale version and perhaps those were all marketed as Starburst and the vinyl gunwale as Cumberland.

Re: "best" tripping boats?

I own a Bluehole Cumberland. It is a Starburst hull with vinyl gunwalls. Great design for ANY moving water!

Re: "best" tripping boats?

... repeated multiple places but never seen actual documentation of that. I have several catalogs from Blue Hole that advertise it as the Blue Hole Starburst, and saw many Blue Hole Starbursts on the river when I was a beginning whitewater paddler in the 80s. But I've never seen a Blue Hole Cumberland.

Re: "best" tripping boats?

I can't think of a better all around hull shape than the Blue Hole Starburst for what you are describing. I'd not heard of a Starlight before but it sounds great. I have quite a few miles in a Dagger Legend also - the Starburst is faster and I like it a lot ...

Re: "best" tripping boats?

Ive tripped with Dumoines Explorers and Prospecters too but have to agree with the Starburst and Canyon as the preferred. Both have a good combination of capacity, maneuverability and speed. Between these two I have slight preference for the Starburst as it somehow ...

Re: "best" tripping boats?

... layup, or my paddling partner was a little bigger (she'll be 9 next year:) ) I'd just use what we have and stay off the III's. It sounds like the Starburst and it's derivations are one route to go, and the 17' boats (Dumoine, etc...) another. Hopefully the opportunity will appear to paddle a few ...

Re: "best" tripping boats?

My "normal" favourite is the Esquif Canyon --which is one of the several Blue Hole successors. It has a blunter bow than the Starburst which is based on the same hull which makes it dryer, although it tracks marginally worse. Both boats usually need some resetting of factory fittings. ...

"best" tripping boats?

... so it is a tough ask for a boat (maneuverable but not too much of a pig on flat water). I've read that the Blue Hole Cumberland / Evergreen Starburst is one of the best in a few places, but I suspect there are other favorites as well - what are your experiences? Thank you ahead of time for ...

WTB 48" nylon 3D Voyaguer or Harmony end bag

Idaho greetings. First post - no idea you guys were around - cool.

So...open canoe flotation wanted.

Looking for a 48" nylon 3D Voyaguer or Harmony bag to complete the outfitting of our new (old) Starburst. (It came with 1 really nice bow bag.)

Thanks much.
