OC1 for river running

If you mostly do river running and light play in a kayak and want to do similar in a OC1, you want a boat with some acceleration. A Taureau is going to seem really doggy. So will a Nitro. The Paradigm is better. A Prodigy or Prodigy X will have even better hull speed. An Ocoee would be a boat you co...

Solito at MEC in Vancouver

Yeah, that was my boat. What a fun day it was to walk into the store and see that mango-colored boat strapped to a pillar just waiting for me. I really couldn't understand why more people weren't hot to buy the Solito. A factory-shortened Ocoee with some improvements--what's not to like? I don't get...

Solito

Randy, the Solito is a fun boat. If you're comfortable in Ocoees and Phantoms, you'll like it. I hear it's now getting a stronger layup of Royalex. That's been its chief fault. The bow dents quite easily in the ones that first came out like mine. I hope it's a lot stronger. It's hard to buy them in ...

I've paddled the Paradigm

I took a class in September with Bob and he had a Paradigm along with him that he had just paddled on the Grand Canyon. He was still playing around with the ideal seat placement. I got to paddle it for about 20 minutes in some easy whitewater where we were working on drills. I liked the boat a lot. ...

Canoes for the large and tall sizes

I've had no one over 180 pounds get in my Solito ... yet. I would bet if you're okay in an Ocoee, you'd be okay in a Solito. The Solito draws less water than my Phantom. I do remember once seeing a 260-pound guy get in an Ovation. Suddenly what was normally (for a lighter person) an incredibly stabl...

Solito vs Ocoee

I have both a Solito and Bell Ocoee. I personally like the Solito better because it's shorter, but has all the great handling characteristics of the Ocoee. It's a really fun boat. The cons on both boats are their layups are light. It's thin Royalex. I baby the Solito by only taking it on runs that a...

Contest Winner

I got an email from the Solito naming contest winner and it turns out he's selling the canoe he won because he's not a whitewater paddler. He's going to use the funds to buy a flatwater canoe. Oddly enough, in Italian, the word "solito" means "commonplace." The boat itself iss far from commonplace t...

Evergreen Solito OC1

I've bought one, outfitted it, and now tried it in the water. It's a great boat. Handles like a short Ocoee. The hard chines are excellent for carving. The boat doesn't have much initial stability, but it has good secondary. It accelerates well. I'm still evaluating the surfing, but so far I've like...
