Re: Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?

You can also whittle a stick to use as a bung....

Shawn at Fall line canoes has apparently been retrofitting raft valves to existing bags (presumably removing the inflation tube?), would that be of any use to you?

Re: my canoes voyage to valhalla

Composite (assuming we mean resin matrix with some kind of fibre reinforcement) isn't very recyclable. most people just sell old composite boats on, there is always someone starting out who can make use of a boat no matter how outdated it is or how much restoration is needed.... Alternatively there ...

Re: Esquif/Mike Yee Outfitting

I believe the Esquif outfitting (black thigh straps with red webbing) is made by Beluga world. The biggest difference is the webbing - the Mike Yee has much tougher webbing & stitching (I've broken Esquif straps). The Mike Yee pedestals are also shorter - his XL pedestal is the same length as a sta...

Re: How do you brace your feet

I have no doubt that not getting in a C1 often enough is the biggest issue for me!

Should be out in the slalom boat tonight, but I forgot to load it this morning and I'm still exhausted from Seaquest at the weekend (think orienteering crossed with sea kayaking or canoeing)

Re: How do you brace your feet

I've always found there is enough friction agaisnt the top of my feet (which are laid out flat to the bottom of the boat) that I don't need any toe blocks or anything, trouble I have is finding the comfortable spot twice! I have experimented with small blocks of foam under my ankles to ease the stra...

Re: C1 in Flagstaff?

I can't say I'm entirely surprised, the boat had seen better days and I've since learned that some of the creases indicate it must have been folded at some time (how can you do that on the GC?)

Re: Who pays for damaged gear in a rescue?

It is something often overlooked that the ratio of prusik diameter to rope diameter is important to ensure the prusik grips properly. In this case I would have to say that the damage is down to your poor choice of prusik cord (been there myself). I would probably go further though and point out that...

Re: An Option for Prelude paddlers

As I recall from the stuff on FB the Condor is going to be primarily for big volume rather than steep creeking, I think it already did (or is already scheduled for) a run down the grand canyon. It piqued my interest because I'm booked for a trip in sept 2016 and already trying to decide what boat I ...

Re: An Option for Prelude paddlers

I reckon it would be worth trying to meet Milkman in the middle some time to try his Option in case you find it works perfectly well for you A lot of West Coasters will be wanting to try the Option now that we're in the AR (after Royalex) age. The one downside of bulkhead outfitting though is that ...

Re: An Option for Prelude paddlers

I've never tried a Prelude but I had a go in Mat's Option in Corsica on the Lower Vecchio (3-4, never done it before) and found it instantly easy to get along with. The river was kind of low volume with lots of bouncing off rocks and small bouldery drops so I never had any need to try and find out h...

Wow!
I find it hard enough to stay upright with a paddle. Looked like he only missed 1 gate? (quite a few touches) - just goes to show the importance of positioning and using the flow.

Re: Onside Forward stroke

I agree (mostly). A low brace is reactive, to be used after something went a bit wrong. By getting support from a forward paddle stroke (and you will get some from a cross deck stroke too) you can stay in control and driving and avoid something going wrong in the first place. Something I often tell ...

Re: Octane 92

Can't speak for the stability of the 92, with 2 paddlers, but I paddled some long pools all last weekend in my 91 sitting on the thwart behind the saddle. Try that with any other whitewater canoe. -M- :D Um, Whitesell Piranha was OK sitting on the thwart for long periods (only fell in once doing th...

Re: C1 in Flagstaff?

I don't know of any C1s in Flagstaff, but I was looking for an OC1 not a C1 so may have missed something. It took me a while to find, but Moenkopi Riverworks have a Whitesell Piranha OC1 for rent, it's not in the best shape ever but it looked after me pretty good in May 2013. For anyone that comes a...
