Re: Wenonah Ultra-Lite Sundowner and Whitewater Racing
I was amazed first time I paddled the Loisach (1994?), we found it fairly slow going in plastic river runners (I had a corsica S, can't remember about the others) picking our way down narrow twisty routes between the massive boulders, then there was a shout from behind to move over and 20 or more ki...

Re: Soft Royalex / Delamination?
Thanks for the tips guys. I do like the Ocoee, but my paddling is outgrowing it and I'll probably have to get a short PE boat at some point, although I also like the idea of a short composite boat. If I can keep my Ocoee in service until Big Dog have finalised their new gunwale boat and got it into ...

Re: Pépé - An extra wide slalom C1
Oh right, I think it must have changed between 2007 and 2013 then because that looks more like a bigger version of what we had at around 8000cfs (I think) in 2013 than what we had at around 10000cfs in 2004 and 2007 where the Vee wave stretched from the edge of the ledge hole to the right bank - it ...

Soft Royalex / Delamination?
Checking the boats were secure ready to drive back from Corsica the the other day I noticed that my Ocoee (Dagger, crica 1996) has developed some soft spots, notably around the bilge in some areas and in the bottom in others. It was a hot, sunny, day, but the hull was not especially hot where the so...

Re: hip pads
Tried pads and then ditched them. By the time I had finished contouring side slabs in my Ocoee I had quite enough contact with the boat around the knee - mid thigh area to stop my legs sliding about when rolling and actually at hip height I like to be able to slide my bum around a bit when weighting...

Re: Pépé - An extra wide slalom C1
Excellent - I'm quite jealous, my next trip is September next year but I want to be there now! Lava Vee wave seems to be the luck of the draw whether it backloops you or not, but getting flipped closer to the cheese grater must focus the mind somewhat! Last time I was there it was low and there was ...

Re: Paddling Gear and Rolling
I doubt if the weight is the problem, think about these things: - Different PFD, different cut, might affect how you move differently. - Some people find a helmet with built in peak creates more drag when rolling. - Where you wearing any other clothing differently - drysuit or something? - If you ar...

Re: The end of ESQUIF..... :(
This idea of going back to basics and learning to paddle around rocks is going to work for the vast majority of boaters who paddle up to about grade 4 on bigger volume rivers. For the minority that are pushing the envelope to catch up with the extreme kayakers running steeper and lower volume stuff ...

Re: Trip to Portland
Portland, Oregon. That's lucky, Portland, Dorset is not ideal for canoes, the tide race off Portland Bill is particularly notorious and sea kayakers only attempt it in very good weather conditions (mainly because if there is any swell at at Chesil cove you would get smashed to bits on the steep shi...

Re: Making a breakdown paddle
As far as I know Werner canoe paddles are built the same as their kayak paddles - the shaft runs all the way to the tip of the blade, you cannot separate it. On the other hand it means the shaft will be hollow right the way down so you should be able to cut it anywhere and fit an internal spigot. Is...

Re: The end of ESQUIF..... :(
Do you think it could have something to do with the T-Formex? Maybe a lawsuit or patent issue? I've not heard anything, and I'm not sure it matters. Could be T-Formex, could be lost sales to SUPs, could be regulations, the end result is the same. Or a combination of many factors, coupled with a poo...

Re: Shoes for Canoe/C-1
I like something fairly stiff in OC1 because I have my feet more or less vertical on the pegs and I like the sole to ease the strain on my toes. In C1 my feet have to lay flat so I need something as flexible as possible, but with a robust upper section over the toes where they rub against the hull.....

I voted honestly, but I may not have contributed useful data.... It's too far for me on account of the Atlantic being in the way.

Re: L'Edge Cracking.
If you ask for advice on boats but dont like the message then dont ask. Seems to me that your honesty might be inferred differently by those of us with loads of WW experience in PE boats who accept occasionally having to get one welded as part of the game, than by relative beginners who thinks a bi...
