As far as youngsters, it takes a dedicated person to get them to take up the sport like the late Ray Maclean or Dennis Adams in CO.

With 25 years of whitewater boating and living in the east, midwest, and Rocky's of the US, none of those regions has stood out as being best for canoeists. The overall number of whitewater paddlers does change, but the proportion of canoeists doesn't vary significantly. I know of only one dedicated...

The change from high brace to low brace position in the C1 roll is what makes it different from rolling a kayak and more complex. My river roll became much better when I stopped flipping the paddle before the hip snap and rotated my shaft hand instead. You don't get the righting component from the s...

Re: canoe club article

You're missing the first step to get into the low brace position where you do the hip snap. You either have to flip the paddle or rotate you shaft hand. Influenced in part by the recent discussion on here, I wrote a little 3-step article on rolling for my canoe club's newsletter. Rolling is a relati...

If you have an adult in the bow, the Caper is much wetter than the Caption otherwise it's a good tandem boat.

If someone's out west and looking for one, the Westwater Ranger had one for sale last fall for $300. The hull was in good shape, but it had minimal outfitting.

Re: I am pretty concerned about what I read here

We are responsible for our own safety and it’s an individual decision to determine an acceptable risk. Yes, having someone else to rescue us is wonderful, but it should not be used as a factor in deciding whether you run a rapid or not. If a rescue from a whitewater situation is necessary, it will o...

I used a pedestal from a Cascade I had already. It had been comfortable and held me securely for years in the Cascade. I didn't have to modify the hull to use it, but had to extend the pedestal in the rear with rain gutter to reach the stern foam pillar. I was also able to use Dagger's hip grabber, ...

Several years ago, I did a trip thru Hells Canyon and there was an attempt being made by the authorities to recover a solo canoeist's body.

From what I remember the guy had planned on canoeing the length of the Snake and Columbia. He was in a tandem canoe and carrying a bicycle.

The C1 finals are online: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/share. ... _CSM_EN033

How does the difficulty of this course compare to past Olympics?

If somebody finds the C2 finals, please post the link.

I paddle a large Flirt and I'm 68" tall. I use a 58" paddle for river running in deep water. You can go from offside to on without lifting the paddle out of the water in this short of boat. In an OC-1, I prefer 56" to make the change from off to on easier. For playing, I'd think I'd want to go short...

Back to Gabe's original post, Idaho has much bigger and powerful water than the Grand, especially now. This videos been making the rounds, but it proves the point: http://youtube.com/watch?v=rSXSxC8xjx4 One thing really great about being in an OC-1 in big water is you have much better visibility tha...

If you're OC-1ing big water and running slower than the current, you will get a surprise back surf as you're climbing a big wave that'll zip you sideways.

That's fun as long as you don't end up in the wrong place.

The disappearing kayaker makes you wonder if an open boat could do a mystery move in Souse Hole. Want to give it a try AJ and have your photo posted?

I might be able to come up with an OC photo in Powerline to satisfy the peanut gallery, stay tuned.
