Re: Do I have a first descent?
Well, I asked a buddy of mine who was open boating a lot of class four before I even started and yes, he ran it in the late eighties in a blue hole. And he figures he was nowhere near the first. He knows of a couple guys that were years ahead of him.

Re: Do I have a first descent?
I guess it's possible because that run can be hard to catch with water, but i would think it was run. people around here were running class five like giant gap, cherry creek, 49 to bridgeport, burnt ranch, in the eighties-nineties. They just didn't broadcast it.

Re: Tow tether suggestions.
i don't know many people that carry a tether anymore, but lots that with carry a piece of webbing that can have many many uses. I use a 10' or so length (not a loop, but a length with loops at each end) of webbing and it get's used as an anchor or for the short rope needs that come up way more often...

Re: Tow tether suggestions.
A canoe or c1 trying to tow is entertaining at least.
I never do it. I like to bulldoze. Way safer and more fun too. If a kayaker wants to clip on, i just get out of the way.

Re: Drilling Anchors in C1
bolt through the webbing is fine. I double the end (though that's probably not required), heat up a trashed phillips screwdriver and melt the hole through the strap. I use 1/4" bolts and 1" fender washers.. has never failed me. I'll also many times just use the kayak seatbolt hardware for the anchor...

Re: kayak conversions with higher back deck?
seems like any creek kayak is going to be similar back there. they need to be able to lean back without breaking their spine. I'm sure you know all of this but.. I haven't been able to find a shoe with any sort of heel that'll work in a c1. They also need to be bendy, as in bend backwards like your ...

Re: paddle suggestions
I've had a quite few nice carbon paddles and broke every one. For me (20+ year veteran hack) the h2o team c1 is by far the best. It's tough, light, feels just fine in the water, and it just makes me smile when i dig full power in to a rock with it.. it just quitely flexes and slides off without a ca...

Re: Which C1 for this open boater?
I would pass on the atom. It does nothing very good. Get a slalom boat. If there are clinics or a slalom c1 crowd to learn from this will do more for your paddling skills than anything else you can do. Seriously... Good slalom paddlers style really difficult whitewater beautifully. I wish I had take...

Re: ... 'cause it's all about the water.
Yes John, Pillsbury is a great class III run. It's a deep, remote feeling canyon with lot's of fun little rapids. I spent many many days on that one. The only thing keeping it from stardom is the longish shuttle and lack of healthy flows. 300 is ok, but it can handle much more. Trouble is it starts ...
