Re: Anyone else heading to ASCI to watch the worlds?
I'm pretty sure I'm heading up Friday night. Can anyone recommend a campground with good showers nearby?

Re: What is the most difficult CBoat you've ever paddled?
Mentor. I don't think I got out of the eddy in that one. The Oxygen wasn't horrible. I think it would be easier to paddle if I didn't already know how to paddle a C-boat. Conversions don't really count, but Vic has a Necky Rip. I think it's around 24" wide. Awesome on a wave. Doggone scary on flat-w...

Re: Slalom boat outfitting.
The boat pictured is a Vadja Nova. It's tough to get the back of the bungee in, due to whatever is covering the joint (ends of the bungee). Once that's in, I kind of lean left & work the right side in up to my hip, then the front. Once the front is hooked over, work the rest of the right side in whi...

The bungee will be on the outside. The fringe will hang out the bottom like a skirt.

Thanks. It is a good looking boat when it's wet & the sun's shining on it. I'll see if I can figure out how to shrink the files & get some to you.

Re: Paddlestats.net
WOW! That's quite an undertaking. I noticed you had last year's results for the Great Rappahannock Canoe Race. They've got results back to '81 & course records on the web-site: http://grwcr.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The General Clinton has results back to '96 at: http://www...

WHAT?!? No pics of a metal-flake Viper? We've GOT to fix that. I can probably find some surfing pics of the Sith. I also noticed there are no images of a Vadja Nova. I can help w/ that one too. How big do you want the files? https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/t1.0-9/q74/s720x720/...

Re: Dragonskin Substitute?
I like a random orbital sander (ROS) for the final shaping. It's not the best choice for the inside curves, such as the knee holes in a bulkhead. Great for everything else though. This works ok too: http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?CATEGORY=SURFORM+TOOLS+AND+BLADES&TYPE=PRODUCT&PARTNUMBER=21-...

Re: too darned cheap
Are the thwarts different lengths? Shorter thwarts narrow the boat & give less rocker, making a faster, better tracking, wetter boat. Longer thwarts widen the boat & give more rocker, making a slower, better turning, dryer boat.hazardharry wrote:the other canoe seems to have less rocker?

Re: Wanted: composite bucket seats
If you're going to make seats, don't pull a mold, unless the seat you have fits perfectly. Use the wet sand in a box method to get a seat that fits you exactly.

Re: Wanted: composite bucket seats
I had John @ Savage River Canoes make one for my downriver boat several years ago. His web-site shows them at $105 or $60 w/o frame. I assume you don't need the frame. You'll need to specify the distance between your rails so it'll slide smoothly. Also specify the racing (small) seat, or the recreat...

I agree, it is great that this video exists. John, thank you for adding the story. It's good to see you here again. I hope you are well. Thanks again for teaching me about peel-ply! Makes it look like I know what I'm doing. After watching the Yough video, another was suggested. This is you & B...

Re: Teaching Canoe Rolling?
Start by teaching the low brace. Get them to go low enough to dip the top of their head in the water & brace back up. The shaft arm should be between the head & hips, not above or on the head. Top hand should be palm up. I think too many people teach to swing out w/ the top hand palm down, then flip...

Re: ideas for lightweight thwarts
I laid up some Kevlar on a sheet of plate-glass. At the bottom edge I hot-glued a piece of tubing & rolled the Kevlar around it (think cockpit rim). This put the curl at the end of the new deck-plate to shed water. I think the regulation is maximum 1" above the gunnel. Once it cures, cut it to fit &...
