Re: Yellow Blue Hole Sunburst

ha ha - I'd love an old OCA - talk about old school...

Good luck with the new toy.

WTB, rent (or trade for) Caption with triple position saddle

I'm taking my daughter down Lodore Canyon of Green last two weeks in June and would prefer to paddle something more responsive than my OCA. If you have a Caption for sale or trade let me know as I have been looking for one for awhile. I will be driving from WNC to Colorado/Utah and could ...

Re: Gel Flooring Knee pads in Option

In the "good old days" I used to use those black rubber roofer's knee cups - they gripped pretty well to the aluminum of the old grumman. By the time I moved to a blue hole (OCA) I had figured out that it was easier to just glue a neoprene pad down...

Re: Boat of the Week - Perception Gyra Max

Most evenings at NOC, some cook would emerge from the kitchen, board his yellow Gyramax, and run off a million or two front and back enders at the Falls.

It was almost as much fun as watching Dick Wooten side surf his OCA, sans float bags as usual.

Re: Question re. Royalex deterioration over many years

... to want that boat, that hull. I would buy back my OT Tripper because it was such a great tandem for easy whitewater. But I wouldn't buy an old OCA because, while the Royalex was top notch, the hull design was just so-so.

Re: Do I have a first descent?

... special skills (or lack thereof) being necessary for running the Box. I have some photos somewhere of a guy running the CAL Salmon in a Blue Hole OCA in the early 80's, and that is far tougher than Box Canyon. I've done the CAL Salmon and the Scott, too, but on both of those I have first-hand ...

Re: boat for my dog and me

My previous lab spent a bunch of time with me on the Nanty and Tuck in a Bluehole OCA - Even though it is very old school, I paddled an awful lot of stuff solo in the OCA too...

... fine boats. I know of at least 3 that are currently for sale. I have paddled the 16 and have owned MR Explorers, Mohawks, Seda Scout, Blue Hole OCA, etc but the Legend 15 is the best all rounder I have paddled. I owned one and sold it due to lack of space after a move and have regretted it ever ...

Replacing Blue Hole aluminum gunwales with vinyl

I am in the middle of replacing the gunwales on my 70's era Blue Hole OCA. The aluminum gunwales had been moderately wrapped and were holding the hull out of shape. Due to inadequate funds I am forced to go with the vinyl gunwales I have found at a discounted ...

Re: Sunburst

... makes them so heavy is Blue Hole used some THICK royalex on those original hulls. It also gave unbelieveable longevity to those old Sunbursts and OCA's. Keep em out of the sun and they will outlast pretty much anything. They are going to be heavy no matter what you do. Wood gunnels will still ...

Re: Royalex Grumman Canoe

I've paddled a few - years ago. Grumman was trying to compete with Blue Hole when the OCA ate Grumman's market share. As I recall they were about 20% less expensive than the OCA, but not nearly as good for whitewater.

... solo boats) will do everything you want, and plenty of people have paddled class IV with them, but it isn't easy. I've seen guys in solo Blue Hole OCA's taking on class V whitewater in some old videos out of the 80's, but I wouldn't recommend it. So if you're looking for a canoe that will be easy ...

Re: Hip pads...

... The traditional situation was that the paddler was "small" relative to the boat. When you're solo paddling an Old Town Tripper or a Blue Hole OCA, tying yourself tight to the boat with thigh straps, hip pads, knee wedges, etc., doesn't necessarily help, because you're a small jockey on a big ...

Re: Boat of the Week - Dagger Caption

Never paddled it tandem, but it was a dry, fast solo boat in moderately big water... Certainly more responsive than the OCA I was used to paddling. I thought it was a step up from the sunburst as a plastic class slalom boat...

Re: Specs/ questions for fixing old blue hole OCA/ Sunburst

Thanks everyone for the details and advice! It's blue, so maybe it's a SunII. Still very shallow compared to today's designs!

I'm considering going the wood route if I can't get my hands on anything else soon.
