Re: Buying a used Spark--issues?

Haha, Ian, sure.. I have yet to meet someone who got rid of theirs though ;D

Regarding Bulkheads, of course no anchors mean no glue-in of such.. and more control IMHO.
I'd highly recommend putting a BH in any boat..

:D

Re: Buying a used Spark--issues?

While anchors do sometimes quickly pull loose if glued in with the wrong adhesive, it is not a problem that you should look at when buying a used one. You'll either just reglue them, or make your own adjustments to whatever anchors there are anyways. I'd recommend either using GFlex or MS-Polymers t...

NRS, and for failed dump valves (the big ones) you could replace them with a cheap kind of raft valve. Also NRS..

Re: Help Choosing my First WW Solo Canoe

What is your paddling style like, and what are you looking to paddle other than a "grade" - there must be a favorite kind of paddling or maybe, all of it (which is also nice ;D)? The Spark is a nice boat for smaller people, it's fast, lightweight and nimble. Some find it unstable but the verdict is....

Re: Shacho west coast, 6 month check in

Yep.. please define "snappy" y'all ! ;D If snappy means, it's twitchy (haha, just joking of course) :D Really.. to me, it could mean everything from "will remind you of mistakes quickly" to "snaps into eddies on a dime".. It's also not just the perception changing with paddler weight.. it's what act...

Re: Ocoee tripping?

The whole issue of tripping with WW boats is a tricky question for sure and very dependant on style/philosophy of the tripping. What are your goals? If you want to paddle WW first and foremost, but it is remote/hard to reach WW, you'll likely be OK sleeping in a barely-warm-enough ultralight sleepin...

Re: Saddle Removal

Pull up! That's it. But slowly. The glue is not very resistant to pulling forces. You can start at one end and work your way to the other, or just let the water do it as suggested before if you have the time.. ;D

Re: Deck the hulls with scraps of fabric; Falala La La. . .

You could also learn to paddle that thing dry for starters.. :D

Also, removing the pumps & batteries will likely give you about three to four inches more freeboard ;D

Re: patching royalex

I second that, G on ABS works better than on Vinyl. I used to make complicated laminations with an ABS sheet inset just like the original one but pure gflex with filler works so much faster. Open up the crack/area, bevel/round off/smooth edges to eliminate any stress points/crack entryways (existing...

My Arsenal so far is - a (cheap but good) straight kitchen knife, about 25cm long.. kept sharp - 80 grit sandpaper spray glued on paper tube - wood rasp (half-round) - jap. pullsaw (not sooo good.. it sticks ion the foam more than the narrower knife and doesnt cut much faster) - jigsaw - angle grind...

Re: Options for younger developing Open Boaters

If you have a ten-year old, you'll likely not have to look for stability too much, but rather for a lightweight and narrow boat.. so he/she can reach the water! So the challenge is the same as with smaller women (or guys). I'd go Millbrook if possible, Inferno for example although it is quite high, ...

Re: Welding a L'edge?

However you weld, make sure to (for example using a scraper) take the weld down to the original thickness of the material and even out the surface completely. This is key to eliminate stress points that will eventually fracture again. The welded surface should feel completely smooth afterwards. Pres...

Re: A twelve-step program -- then RECOVERY !!

Well I consider myself a west coast boater, having spent my boating adolescence there - first own sea kayak, first ever roll, first whitewater paddling (open boats only ;D) and such.. so although I'm really not there, that would make 3 more new designs for myself and 2 for Cordula.. (we got a Big Do...
