The solvents in Marine Goop can do interesting things you probably don't want to see on your personal boat. Sta-Bond is pretty much standard for retrofitting over old outfitting, but the bond is only as good as what you're putting it on. Scrape and remove everything you can first. As previously note...

A few years ago the price of new boats jumped. Gone are the days when you could get a new boat and outfit it for $800. When boats were fairly cheap, the supply flowed freely. People were buying new and selling their old every year or two. Now that boats are higher priced, people are sitting on them ...

Yep, stories of Al's boat being dead are seriously exaggerated.

Took 4 small welds to seal the gouges he was using as an excuse to try and get a new boat, and now his old Taureau is good to go!

Hey Al,

I sent you an e-mail. Can you get me photos of the crack, or let me know when we can hook up so I can get photos and send them to Esquif.

Thanks,
Eric

Most of the cold cracks are all of 4" long, just extending down from the screw holes. Since that area is generally reinforced by the stiffness of the gunwales, I don't think hull flex will be an issue.

Felt like a dentist doing a cold crack repair

Decided to try something new on a cold crack repair. Ground out the outside of the cracks and foam core (inside wasn't yet cracked) , filled the newly made void with methyl methacrylate. For smaller cracks that just went from the screws up, I dremeled out the core from the top before giving it a "fi...

Not sure about the Rule 1100's I switched to Mayfairs since they twist off for cleaning. http://www.cabelas.com/spodw-1/0037804.shtml Bracket/ body is mounted to hull with Plexus MA-300 and some 1/2" SS screws. Mounting bracket will never come out without some serious work, but pumps can be removed/...

Put the boat in the water and FEEL where the sweet spot is. Measuring from land never works. People underestimate how fat their thighs are or how big their butt really is. Having someone eyeball while you're on the water doesn't work in assymetric boats with differential rocker. Trimmed a tandem onc...

Gently wipe the hull with Acetone to remove the oxidation. Wax with paste car wax. Unless you're trying to sell the boat and get more $$$ for it, just leave the oxidation. WARNING: You can totally dissolve the outer skin with Acetone, use very little and be careful or you'll end up with an ugly mess.

Ace Hardware usually has a good selection of wide pan head screws. McMaster Carr will also have it. http://www.mcmaster.com/ If you just want to fill the holes and don't need the screw or bolt, have a plastic welder seal them. They'll melt some plastic into the hole and it's good. You can try the sa...

Floatation sizing problem: Just FYI, the float bag size will depend on the outfitting, specifically how the bag cage is built. As has been noted above, some people use different sized bags in the same boat. In my opinion a properly fitted bag is one that's slightly larger than the bag cage, and when...

Clarification on Curing: The outer layer of Royalex is vinyl, it doesn't need a cure time. It will wear off with rocks and scratches. The next layer is ABS. This stiffens with time. The middle layer is foam. This stiffens with time. Last two layers are ABS and vinyl on the inside. Doesn't matter how...

General comment on Royalex: The sheeting needs to cure a year or so after being molded to reach full hardness. Old school boats will hold up better because they're cured. A brand new fresh off the mold boat is still soft for that year, and any abuse will show. It's been this way for a long time. How...

It's a very different feel from a Nitro. Bottom is soft chine, there is shouldered tumblehome but nothing down low like the Det/ Nitro/ Blast series. Think round not chined. Stability is solid, you can lean 20+ degrees and the boat just keeps getting firmer. It's perfect for instructors who want to ...
