Re: Detonator in heavy water - what am I doing wrong?
I used to paddle a detonator. . . understanding the rails, you know that distinct low spot in the middle of the boat? the rails angle towards the bow and stern from that point creating essentially 4 distinct edges That makes a lot of sense. I'm betting at least some of those sudden veers/bobbles we...

Re: Detonator in heavy water - what am I doing wrong?
So the themes seem to be: 1. Detonator must be paddled very aggressively in big water. I probably need to redefine what I think is 'aggressive.' 2. Get a better roll. Yep. And if I can't fix my bad technique, I probably don't belong on class 4. I'll add one of my own - slow down, scout more, or at l...

Re: Detonator in heavy water - what am I doing wrong?
I still have access to the Probe, but in most ways have outgrown it. In spite of its size, it's one of the easiest to roll canoes I've paddled. Perhaps that's why my roll in the Detonator is shaky - the Probe may have allowed me to get away with poor technique, similar to the way the RPM used to let...

Re: Detonator in heavy water - what am I doing wrong?
If I flip when all I'm doing is running a drop, then that was a failed run. It might be a failed run for a legitimate reason, like a missed stroke or misreading the water, or it might be a sign that I don't belong on that rapid. If I swim because of a blown roll, that's a double failure. So yes, I n...

Re: Detonator in heavy water - what am I doing wrong?
Roll is about 50% in funky water. It was 0% on that trip. That of course was the proximate cause of the swims, but I consider a run a failure if it involves a roll in the first place.

Detonator in heavy water - what am I doing wrong?
Ran the LG this weekend in my newish-to-me Detonator. Or perhaps "floated down it like a turd in a toilet bowl" would be a better description of my overall day: swam at the bottom of Backender, got blown downstream on what should have been an easy ferry near the top of Canyon Doors and ran the secon...

Re: Dagger Aftershock Re-Outfit
Put a little more foam in it, drill a couple of scupper holes in the bottom of the hull, and you'll have yourself a fine kneel-on-top.

Re: Aerial footage of OC-1 Ohiopyle falls runs
Yep. What the heck were you all thinking, putting up a race course in our playground?
I would have preferred to stay completely out of the way, but that weekend was the only one I could do with my work schedule.

Aerial footage of OC-1 Ohiopyle falls runs
This is not my footage - just happened to run across it. The open boat runs are near the middle of the clip.

Re: 2" cam buckle that WON'T slip
Try a stainless steel version. The stainless cam buckle on the Mohawk saddle in my first boat (from 1995, before they started using cheap plastic buckles) never, ever slipped. Instead of the knurling that plastic cam buckles use, it had teeth that actually left little bite marks in the webbing. This...

Re: Question re. Royalex deterioration over many years
I have a Caption from 94 and a Dimension from 89. They both are built like tanks. I wouldn't and don't hesitate to take them on 'real' whitewater. The Caption just survived a LY trip this past week with two paddlers in it who hadn't tandemed in probably 25 years - lots of full to the gunwales, backw...

Re: suggestions for a kids first boat
My son's first boat on flatwater was a kid sized touring kayak - Perception Carolina 12XS, also sold as the Umiak, and some years the Carolina 12. The name overlaps with an unrelated, 25" wide adult boat. The kid boat is 21" wide. It's discontinued now but shows up used sometimes. He started at 5 an...

Re: Perception gyramax for flat water
Yes, very good point. If you just want something cheap that goes fast and straight enough to make flatwater exercise enjoyable, look for a 14' or longer used plastic day touring kayak or an old sea kayak. Longer and narrower will reward your effort with more speed but will feel less stable if you're...
