Air bags if you want them

While cleaning out my shop building, I ran across a pair of old school vinyl airbags if anyone wants them. They're thick, ugly, and heavy, but I'm pretty sure they still hold air. They came with my used Caption and were installed/holding air when I bought it. Since then, they have sat rolled up in a...

Re: Saddle mods for a kid?

Here's what I ended up doing: 1. Velcroed a second set of thick knee cups on top of the existing knee pads to compensate for short legs/tall saddle (lowering the saddle would have put him too deep in the boat to do effective strokes). This effectively raised the floor of the boat about 3-4 inches. 2...

Saddle mods for a kid?

I'm trying to figure out ways to modify the front station in my Caption to make it easier for my 9 year old son to stay in better contact with the boat. The adult-placed thigh straps are basically useless for him. I'm considering rigging up some foam thigh hooks kind of like a mini bulkhead, though ...

I prefer to use an exciting bit :O)
With minicel, I find that just about any bit can get exciting if it grabs :o

Re: Tandem canoe

Buy it. The Dimension is a fabulous tandem. It paddles way "shorter" than its 16 foot length - very maneuverable, dry, and stable. Bag it out, and it's a great big water boat. Or load it up with gear and camp out of it. I have no trouble catching the same eddies in my Dimension on the LY as I do in ...

Just like a C-boater to fit a square peg in a round hole :).

Re: Learning to roll an OC1--tips please

The attempt from 0:31 to 0:33 is a really clear example of where you need your head to follow your body toward the bottom of the river (lake in this case). The attempt looks beautiful as it starts - the boat is rotating, your body is staying supple and slinking toward the water. Then your head appea...

Re: Boat of the Week - Dagger Caption

Good boat, though it can be wet in a side surf. Of the tandems I've paddled, so far the only one I would even consider replacing it with would be a Blast. That is, if I didn't just replace it with another Caption. Blast is more fun in technical water and for surfing, but the Caption's hull speed mak...

Re: Battery to build a Lightweight Bilge Pump Syetem

I don't worry about waterproofness for lead acid battery setups, but I got the impression (from others on here, not personal experience) that a lithium system needs to be kept dry even at the connectors to avoid shorting out. Maybe that's just overkill...

Re: traveling with airbags...

Another vote for:

1. Take them out if you can.

2. If you can't take them out, inflate them snug and then keep an eye on them if the sun heats up or if you are driving over a mountain pass. I blew out several D-rings once simply by leaving my bags inflated in the parking lot on a 90 degree day.

Re: Battery to build a Lightweight Bilge Pump Syetem

One caveat with those Trail-Tech plugs. I replaced a dead MTB light system battery with one from batteryspace - no complaints with the battery's performance, but the connector would definitely not be waterproof. The male connector had what looked like a built in o-ring to mate with a matching circul...

Re: off-side side-surf?

Balance, balance, balance. On and off side, you should be able to stay upright with minimal or no paddle involvement. The little spin hole at the LY putin is a perfect place to practice this. Just make sure you can either roll or swim back to the eddy if you flip - Entrance is not a fun rapid to swi...

Aaron, thanks for those pics - really makes it clear what you had to do to make the boat.

Re: Designing my own boat, help please!

I've heard that 'stripping' can be lucrative too. :-) Given the typical boater physique, I'd say it might be more lucrative option to ask for money NOT to strip :-) And thanks to Jeremy for the followup picture - I had been wondering how one would form the blunt entry that most WW open boats have. ...
