Re: Need some tips for basic royalex and vinyl anchor repair
On removing epoxy stuck to the vinyl top layer of Royalex, I use a low angle chisel to neatly "plow" the vinyl off the ABS. Then I bond the anchor directly to the ABS with G-flex. I have a couple of stressed anchor fittings that have stayed on only with G-flex. I used the method described by Pblanc....

Re: Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?
Rather than cutting off entire valves, I merely pulled the outer collars off two valves, and will use them to replace the disintegrating outer collars on the bags in my primary boat. I'll probably pass from old age before UV disintegrates the replacement collars. Thanks to all for interest and sugge...

Re: Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?
Improvising effective bungs or plugs sounds like something to try. But it occurs to me that I have a couple of Voyageur/Harmony "rodeo" float bags I bought for my slalom boat and am no longer using, so I may take the valves from those.

Re: my canoes voyage to valhalla
How do people dispose of composite hulls? I have a 75 pound, 18.5 hull with no gunwales that I need to get rid of.

Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?
Who sells the valves for these bags? The tips on two of mine just disintegrated, probably from long UV exposure, and I would rather not cannibalize valves from spare bags if I can get new valves. :-? By the way, if you have a valve fail while on a road trip, you can bend the red vinyl tube back and ...

Re: Glass Outrage X needs repair
Kevlar limits propagation because it is very, very resistant to tearing. Carbon is strong, but brittle, and tears more easily.

Re: Glass Outrage X needs repair
If the gelcoat chips are simple, I would just fill them with a little G-flex and sand smooth. When I do skid plates, I don't use Kevlar felt. I put on several concentric layers of S-glass, larger layers first. But why not just fix the chips and paddle it for the time being? If the boat is pure glass...

Re: Glass Outrage X needs repair
I was not aware that Mad River ever made and sold any "glass" Outrages. Do you know the layup? What color is the interior of the boat?

Re: What Fabric for Boat Repairs
No, he meant diolen, not Dynel or Twaron. Twaron is not a cheaper alternative to Kevlar. It is not a weaker alternative to Kevlar. Diolen is CAP or polyester, and is a cheaper, though weaker, alternative to Kevlar. This info is available on the sweetcomposites website.

There's a fellow in Stow Mass who has several OC-1s, Millbrooks. He let me try his Defiant one time.

Re: What Fabric for Boat Repairs
jaywolfe, do you mean *diolen* the polyester, rather than dynel the slippery exterior cover? Diolen makes a tolerable outer layer because it wears fairly smooth, but should be used only for tension repairs, like Kevlar.

Re: What Fabric for Boat Repairs
Note that glass you use for repairs will bond better to resin if the glass cloth is "fresh" from a supplier, rather than having been lying around your basement for more than a year. For minor patching, old glass is probably OK, but for a major repair, fresh glass is better. It has to do with the Sil...

"He don' need no steenking paddle..."
Might be time for a new ICF class. But as he's a c-1 paddler, should he have used just one hand??
