Re: Dry land rolling practice

... about Pauls, "step and flipper".-M- Me too, MM! Paul -- please! . . . Einar's point about learning first in the pool, with a smaller hull, makes sense. I've had a hand in teaching new C-boaters basic rolling techniques, and I start them off in a C-1. I think they find it easier to nail technique ...

... round until it feels good. You could even arc the top of the grip. I can post pictures of the fancy grips on my Mitchell and Clinch River, but I sense that you're in a hurry to get back on the water.

keep at it guys

The number of innovators and manufacturers has become so small that you kinda really want them to make a buck, enough to succeed and to keep us on the rivers.
In a sense we are beta testers, sharing some of the risk.

Re: A bit scared....

... Canoeists here paddling class III-IV have probably already left the canoeing community behind and have a crew of kayakers to paddle with, in a sense they don't have it so bad here, because there's lots of those kayakers around and lots of runs. And for folks that commited, they are probably ...

Ditto to what JohnD posted. Wayner has been a great open boat instructor and packs a fantastic sense of humor too.

... firm enough to push the bow away and create that little mound of water. The technique has been called "pinning the bow" though to me that makes no sense. One may need a J stroke occasionally if the currents get the boat off course. It is actually possible to single-stroke from rest with this bow-pinning, ...

Re: Minimum backrest thickness?

This all makes sense. Thanks everyone. First paddle trip tomorrow. We'll see how the trim goes. Not sure how I could move the thwart without also moving the tabs they are bolted to

Re: Minimum backrest thickness?

You can always add more foam to expend the knee pads.

It's better to have the trim you like (and fix the outfitting) than make the outfitting work but end up with a bow light, or stern heavy boat (etc.).

Make sense?

Thanks, Bob P. That note about artificial courses.... Whenever I see a race on a natural course, it makes somewhat more sense. Even old Augsburg looks more "natural" than the latest Olympic wonders.

... in the middle of the boat? the rails angle towards the bow and stern from that point creating essentially 4 distinct edges That makes a lot of sense. I'm betting at least some of those sudden veers/bobbles were the result of accidentally engaging an edge. I've almost always paddled soft chined ...

Re: Trinity River Labor Day Fest....anyone out west coming?

No, not that I'm coming, in my dreams, but I did look up Trinity River on the AW site - saw quite a few runs, none of which seemed to make sense at 950cfs... what sections do you run?
