I once borrowed a RPM conversion and paddled it down the Ocoee. I liked it fine, but missed the edges. I have a Redline now that I love. Try looking for a used one, or maybe an Axiom, which seems to be the current iteration. I weigh 195, btw.

While I ended up not buying a new boat, I did check into it several months ago with LL and yes they do sell empty hulls (with walls but no holes drilled) and the price is a good bit less than for a K-1. Could be an interesting option with their new creek boat.

I'm with Jack (and about the same weight). The Redline is a superb surfing and stern squirting boat, is stable and has more speed than shorter playboats. No problem rolling it. I paddle it up to 3+ or easy 4, no creeking. You exceed the manufacturer's max weight recommendation, and no boat is going ...

Another vote for the Encore. The oldest design, but it's superb in big waves. Also given your size and the fact that it's the cheapest, it's the obvious choice.

Cool, I'll plan on it. Just saw the traveling Banff festival a couple of weeks ago so it's great that the NPFF is doing this too.

May not be relevant, but many years ago developed a wrist problem that I thought was tendinitis. Rested/iced it for weeks (in the heart of the season) with no improvement. Then decided to try some wrist curls with light weight. Worked great- turned out my wrist was just weak. Also if you paddle with...

I think it's pretty dependent on where you live(d) and what was running all the dry summer long. For me it was the Ocoee. Sometime in the late 90s I and a few other locals followed Bailey Johnson down the river on an "alternate routes" trip. We did a lot of interesting stuff I never would have thoug...

I have two Clinch River wood/composite paddles that are about 15 years old. Broke one on Big Creek in the Smokies back in the 90s- Bailey repaired it and it's still going strong. Can't remember the last time I paddled with anything but wood, but I do have a few RPG plastic paddles around. Those blad...

I'm right handed and paddle on the left. The T-grip controls the paddle for me so it feels natural to have my more coordinated hand there. On pools/flatwater I'll often switch to the right side, but I wouldn't run a rapid. I wouldn't worry about what people think if switching feels good. I would be ...

The southeast season is right about now through April or May. I would probably choose March or April for longer days/warmer air temps, and Chattanooga/Knoxville/Johnson City as a base. Or WV in April/May.

2.6 is a reasonable minimum. Lower only if you enjoy hitting rocks.
