i think the traditional shaped thwarts are not all that necessary for a whitewater canoe. you can save some weight by using thwarts no wider than the narrow part of the thwart in your picture... or do 2- 3/4 x 1 inch thwarts... or do the X pattern.

I'd have to agree with 'msims'... I still think it is THE boat and you don't sound timid about the swimming, so go for it! I have not paddled a viper too often but it is a nice boat. The Ocoee is faster than the Tareau, Zoom and Detonator. I think it would be close to the same speed as the Viper. I am 6'3" and usually around 195lbs. I have a Defiant which is a great boat but I have paddled a Rumba and thought it was a more than enough of a plateform.
