I am going to put in for a Nov 8th, 2013 permit. That seems to have a nice balance of decent odds and good weather (avg temps 68 in the day, 46 at night), while still allowing us to scavenge firewood. The end of the motor season is a real odds killer for October!

Re: Winter in the Grand Canyon
My OC supported trip is at least two years out (I have to rebuild vacation time!), but here is what I am envisioning so far: 1. Doing the trip on the shoulders of the commercial season (early spring/late fall) to avoid the crowds/insane heat/monsoon season without having to pack a ton of winter clot...

Re: Can the l'Edge be used as a tripping boat?
Yes you can do it. K1 kayakers camp out of their creek boats all the time with a similar amount of gear, and as one poster already pointed out the L'edge will happily carry more weight than you plan on taking downstream. With that said if you don't plan on moving into class III+ and above whitewater...

Winter in the Grand Canyon
I just got off my second Grand Canyon trip last month. We launched December 14th and took out at Pearce Ferry on December 31st. For those who don't know the National Park Service has been court ordered to start giving out more private trip permits and restructure the permit system. They have done th...

Go with the biggest of the Star series. They are made to be park and playboats.

Re: Why isn't OCing popular on the west coast? (or is it?)
The last time I checked there are no whitewater kayak makers out here either. I think the single biggest reason is the lack of dealer support out here. To someone looking to get into boating the price point on a canoe makes kayaking look attractive. Then you combine that with there being almost no d...

Re: How come every time I boof...
I would suggest that when you drop over ledges from now on you raise your paddle above your head and let out a whoop like a rafter.
You might also try running ledges backwards so your boof sends your stern skyward.

If you are waiting that long you might want to look into the plastic Maxim the Richard from Mohawk has been talking about.

Do you have any prior kayaking experience with planning hulls? If so I would consider the more aggressive boats. If not try any boat you can get your hands on and make your decision from that. Failing that go cheap!

It will probably be a decent boat for you. If you end up weighing 150 pounds you will not be too heavy for it.
I have no direct knowledge on how it handles because I know it is not the boat for me and nobody up here has bought one yet.

I would love to run the Coquihalla sometime. With all the old road debris it would be a good test. Heather was on it fast. She got it into shore within 150 yards. If it wasn't for the drop I wouldn't even have bothered mentioning the trip as a test. I'll get it out on the Chilli Canyon sometime soon...

So here are some early test results. Test one - Pavement Boat Drag: Failed At Thursday's pool session I dragged my Probe from my car to the door of the pool over dry pavement. The distance was about 50 yards. This was done more to test the company owner's claim that he had been dragging his kevlar k...
