Re: wood gunwales on a Zephyr
Yes, the holes on my Zephyr with factory installed wood gunnels are through the hull just below the gunnel. I never did find a bag that fit this boat very well -- some too big, others too small.

Re: Covert 9.3 in the NE
Price doesn't look especially competitive -- $2650 Cdn vs. $2100 for the L'Edge Lite.
Does anyone know what the boat is actually made of? The vendor's webpage isn't all that helpful because of the proprietary labelling. Is it solid PE, or layered? And if layed, what is it?

Re: Deformation in a Kevlar hull
My son and I fixed a similarly deformed Kevlar boat which had been damaged by having been stored on its side by placing the boat on a sandy beach, pouring hot water on the inside and the weighting the ding with a sandbag from the inside. Problem solved. (PS. It wasn't us that stored the boat imprope...

Re: Nova Craft Ocoee Opinions
My Echoee is about 26" at the widest point across the gunnels and maybe 25" at the bottom of the hull, although due to curve of the chines my measurement is not very accurate. I don't know which version of the Ocoee Andy used to make his mold. Even at this "narrow" width, the boat is extremely stabl...

Re: Nova Craft Ocoee Opinions
Five or six people I paddle with have had the NC version for several years. The hulls look in pretty good shape to me and I have heard no complaints. However, there were issues with the factory outfitting. Several have adjusted the thwarts and moved the saddle and outfitting. Don't know how the NC b...

Re: Fiberglass Mold Making
Novacraft may still be producing Ocoees. They were doing RX until this year and their website now promises it "soon" in Tuffstuff. A (better) alternative is the Echoee being produced by Andy Convery of Echo Paddles. This is a glass Ocoee with an Innegra outer shell. Weighs about 25# without the airb...

Re: Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?
What about the dump valves? You can just tie or clamp off the tube valve, but the dump valves seem to be the first component to fail and are no easily repairable. If there was a source for them I could get another couple of years out of my bags.

Re: Esquif Zephyr for Big Guy?
I think the itching is from fibreglass fragments that the hull starts to shed when it is worn. I had no trouble for the first five years, but now that the boat is almost worn out I have this problem.

Re: Esquif Zephyr for Big Guy?
Can't help you with the weight issue -- I'm about 160. However, as a long time Zephyr owner I have experience with durability. The Twintex is subject to cracks if subjected to a hard blow like impact with a rock. It's not particularly delicate, but eventually every Zephyr I have seen that is paddled...

Re: Width and Stability (good article)
Actually, looking at the schematics, wider is more stable -- if the width continues the length of the boat. But if one only has a spec sheet with one measurement. .. . .

Re: Portage wheels for my Ledge
I use a cart from Seattle Sports (http://www.seattlesportsco.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1861&idcategory=75" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) which looks like a standard canoe cart, but the wheels come off and the frame breaks down. It can go under the air bags of my Optio...

Re: Whithewater tripping solo canoe
As a Zephyr owner and former Rival driver, I guess I'm entitled to an opinion on this one. I would not select the Zephyr as a tripping boat. I have cracked my boat and have been on a trip where a Mistral was wrapped and badly torn down the sides at the centre thwart. In both cases, field repairs wer...

Re: Level 6 Emperor drysuit
At this risk of being disloyal to a local manufacturer, I would second Todd's opinion. Kokotat has a strong reputation for durability and I think that Palm (on your side of the Atlantic) has also stood up well. The problem of course is that reputations are based on what was coming off the line 5 yea...

Re: Royalex is dead?
Twin-Tex is a good material for a boat that is going to be used for trips where an equipment casualty will only be an inconvenience. Smallish cracks can be acceptably field repaired with duct tape and eventually fixed with a factory repair (but say good-bye to the boat for a couple of months). Howev...
